As a continuation of my topic, what is the reason people post here? I mean, what causes some guy (or girl) to teach, and then type in www.davescafe.com and then start or respond to something? Does the person feel alone? Does the person want affirmation? Companionship? Their is some need that this site fills, sort of like a 'junk food' hit at Mcdonalds. From what I observe, there are a lot of lonely guys with Korean wives. Maybe they cannot dialogue with their wives. Maybe they have a need for communication. Anyways, this website hosts some really intelligent people. Then their are those with no clues about life, the ones who critic, and don't really think, the ones who post "the works of the unlearned", that is Pope (for those who are unlearned). But what I am interested in are the people at the far right side of the continuum, those who do have insights, those who are intelligent, yes, they do exist here, and their minds are like gold. As for the rest, those who insists on putting people down, spouting meretricious insights, they are like life itself, on the hike to the Acropolis you will encounter sh** but you must keep your eyes on the gold...............and the Acropolis does afford a host of insight once the wanerer reaches the summit! Twisted Evil

I like writing, I like correcting misinformation, & I like being helpful where I can. Living & teaching here is something I know a bit about. This site, for all its weirdness, talks to my experience. Quite often amusing & informative too.

Interesting post. This is a good site for writers. If Kerouac was in Korea I am sure he would be here as well. Kerouac loved 'weirdness' and, in fact, I would see him wandering the streets looking for some person (persons) to write about.

See, that is what I am talking about. I think some of the 'user trash' have really hurt some good people. They are afraid of being judged, of being made fun of or rejected. There was some poor poster who just wanted to talk about a new Mexican place to eat, he was really afraid people were gonna diss him, really sad! Their is this syndrome in the realm of social psychology called 'roach syndrome', or Charlie Brown syndrome. I think it has caused many really good thinkers to shy away.

Well first of all I resent you naming yourself after a god - you are of mortal blood and as all humans are doomed in the end- then there are a few of lofty ones who like a Pope said -not Alexander ugly man- are "less than God but more than man." Now I am not trying to come off as lofty or condescending because I am: the truth is I come from a long and distinguished line of gentry- ergo I am by my blood and bones a Noble Toad - you on the other hand may think you are smart - and I like your posts but as anyone who is well read you will know that none are quite as clever as the Clever Mr. Toad. I hope I do not insult just trying to point out the axioms of reality.

I post out of benevolence to help those less blessed (like me and my enormous and powerful brain) and to encourage the lesser drudges who slog through life without self awareness, humility, or temperance.

Geez. A little thicker skin is probabably in order, then. It's not like posters have to fear a physical confrontation or even a face-to-face verbal confrontation. And anyone who posts here should do so realizing that some of the other posters are going to be "not very nice". Some will have axes to grind. Some will be responding when they're in a bad mood. Some will come off much worse in this medium than they would in person where body language can soften their words.

For years and years, I worked in retail and service industries and working with the public gives you a pretty good idea just how far the gene pool stretches. You can't let the few nasties-- and they're always a small minority-- ruin your day.

I read the forums because I want to prepare for my trip to Korea later in the year. I post in the forum because these arguments make me reconsider my own thinking. It may seem a little odd, but I learned more about analysis and arguing from rec.sport.baseball, a usenet group, than anything else I've done in my life.

And, frankly, Mercury, if you're going to ask questions of others, don't you think you should be prepared to answer those same questions when they're put to you?

A good thinker is not afraid of being judged.

I've never been on an internet forum that wasn't exactly the same way, except for a couple where most of us know each other in the real world.
A pompous ass is only gonna be more so when he can't see you giggling. A dolt is a dolt wherever you are. Some people get thier kicks by playing devils advocate, trolling, insulting, whatever.
You just gotta separate the wheat from the chaff yourself. There are some people who's posts I automatically skip over. I and I know some people don't like my attitude and my style of humour and they're just skipping over mine (or offering weak attacks).

For me it's simply an exchange of information. I get when I need, give when I can.
