Those lights in the East Sea (Sea of Japan Twisted Evil ) are squid boats. They use these big ass super bright arc lights to attract the squid up to the surface.

When I lived in Sokcho, I used to love watching the boats go out at night. It was like a string of pearls on the ocean.

Are you sure these aren't due to the gas findings recently? They just struck a reserve off the coast of Ulsan, although this sounds too far North compared to that satellite picture.

Those squid boats are pretty impressive when seen from an aeroplane. I remember seeing them when flying over from Japan. Lots and lots of boats, lots of light.

All to feed the squid obsessed Korean folks.

It was on my list of wierass food when I first arrived here along time ago, but The Bobster and Senor Ojinga are real good pals these days. I likes me the soft buttery dried ones in the airtight plastic flatpacks, goes nice with the soju. I think I'll break open one now ...

Mmm.. Outside the movie theatre there's squid carts. Ajuma will toss a handful of squid bits on the squishing fryer (whatever it's called - we use 'em to cook paninis) with some butter and fry it up in about thirty seconds. Great movie snack, just don't forget to bring a couple paper towels.
