Good ol' Roh. I don't follow politics terribly much and the guy's an idiot.

The "KoreaThink" mentality that dogbert appears to be hinting about appears for me with things like Dokdo. I'm not saying Korea is wrong about it, but when a ten-year old kid has an opinion about it, that's just plain freaky to me. When an event becomes hot news, it becomes a major current event and everybody's talking about it and feeling the same. I tried to take my "enlightened" mentality about the two schoolgirls with me back home and my uncle, who had served in the navy, schooled me pretty fast about what was wrong with my view (which was essentially the Korean view, as I was curious about the reactions).

In fact, one of the only times that something has strived to become a hot issue that hasn't seem to have taken off is the thing with foreign teachers. I haven't seen or heard anything that would make me think that I'm being viewed in a different light overall.

I know there's a collective thought kind of sentiment between Korean people, but why is there so much concern when someone doesn't agree with your view? If Roh himself really represents Korean thought, wouldn't he further have a more stable support group, and not be the president that nearly was impeached?

"Koreans should think and make judgments in a way like Koreans,"

in a way like Koreans???

According to the Samsung Group's chairman, Lee Kun-hee, to succeed globally, Korea must forgo the thought that Korea and being Korean is superior, and foreign specialists must be treated with respect.

An official in the International Cooperation Division of Seoul City admitted, "The same complaints regarding visas, transportation, education, and environment are raised every year without being solved, due to the lack of cooperation from government agencies involved and their passive attitudes."

Thanks again, indiercj. I've read the quotes of Roh and it does clear some things up, while leaving some things unclear (to me). What are your thoughts?

Roh said, "ѱε ̱ ģ ϴ ", which I read as "They [the people I'm talking about] are Korean citizens, but are more like Americans than Americans themselves and they are the ones that are most worrisome and difficult. There, President Roh specifically speaks of Korean citizens (that is, not ethnic Koreans in general). Actually, I agree with him, because I have the same concern in regard to U.S. citizens who actually seem to be more Korean than Korean citizens in their thinking.

But Roh goes on to say, "ѱ̸ ѱ ϰ Ǵؾ Ѵ", which means, "If you are Korean, you must think and judge like a Korean". Now in that quote, President Roh does not say "Korean citizen", but merely "Korean". Could that be purposeful, or is Roh merely as careless in his speech as ol' George W.? In any event, I think my interpretation that he's speaking of ethnic Koreans everywhere is fair.

One problem. Who defines what it is to think like a Korean? It's the old inner-group vs. outer-group nonsense.
