Anybody see LBJ when some Quaker or Amish guy set himself on fire outside the White House or Pentagon with some small child beside him? He was protesting the Vietnam War. Does anyone know if that guy died too?
Anyway, I see the board is as empathetic as ever. Apple Scruff's still got the one liners, "Japan doesn't kill people, fire does." Thorin steps in with, "Are they going to set the coffin on fire?" Ilsanman is so overjoyed he's started to dance. I mean, really. We're talking about a guy who killed himself here. |

Well how much sympathy can you have for an idiot like that.
Setting yourself on fire is just a hideous daft thing to do. I feel as much empathy for him as I do the corrupt politicians throwing themselves out of windows when they get caught. I care a bit about the family but not a toss for the idiot jumper or self immoliator.
Bollocks to them, they're a waste of oxygen anyway. Hopefully more stupid genes will get extinguished from the human gene pool. Let them all jump.
I'm fed up with young kids telling me they hate all Japanese and that Koreans are the best and all foreigners (even their teacher yours truly) are evil and crap. The more ultra nationalistic crap artists who set fire to themselves, throw themselves out of windows and into rivers the better, hopefully if all the idiots kill themselves Korea will become more civilised, it'll make Seoul less overcrowded too which would be an added bonus.
Sorry to rant but I've had a bad day. |

In a deeply personal action against the Vietnam War, Quaker Norman Morrison set himself on fire and died outside Secretary of Defense Robert McNamaras Pentagon office. McNamara, who witnessed the immolation, is reported to have vomited.
Do you think you'd ever be driven enough to kill yourself in some public display? |

The man was protesting a war that was taking place at that very moment. However, doing it right in front of a child was extremely irresponsible. The message: public self-immolation is stupid, regardless of what country you are in.

Just what are you implying here? Would you call someone a coward if one said "no"? If so, what would that say about you? |

I wasn't implying anything. When I read about this Korean who killed himself it reminded me of that Quaker in front of the Pentagon. I then asked a question which basically was, could you see yourself doing something similar. That's it, that's all it was. I wouldn't call anyone a coward if they said no.
It's just a shocking thing to do. I'd love to get into their minds to see what these people were thinking right before they lit the match. I know what I would be thinking, Is this really going to do any good? |

indeed...
Are people REALLY so deluded as to think that representational government is going to consider what they think?
care what they think?
change their opinion based on what you think?
thousands upon thousands have died of starvation and STILL people hardly do anything about it.
I think that people's ideas of national democracies are pretty messed up.
As a side note, who sets themselves on fire with the intention to live? I mean really? If his family was there, why didn't they stop him?
do you think they knew about it before hand? It just doesn't seem like that torching your dockers is the type of thing you do in an off handed passionate expression.
or maybe, like school shooters and the like, they view it as a way to become famous.
though if i was hiring the interview would go:
me: oh, you're X-guy
X-guy: Yes that's me
me: Wow. That was quite a passionate thing you did lighting yourself on fire there.
X-guy: I firmly believe that my country is the best in the world, sir.
me: Well let me tell you, we could use someone like you here at "Woodchips, Scrap Paper, Dried Pine Needles R Us"
You're commitment is obvious. Of course, we would feel very threatenned if your pay was late. |
