Did someone at ESLCafe delete this post?

It was about a video membership.

I saw it yesterday.

It was probably deleted because it mentioned something negative about Korea.

Oddly enough, I think I may have unintentionally torpedoed it. Blown it to bits, uh... Bits. But I wasn't aiming at your OP.

MODs, if that's what's happened, I do hope you'll sever my post from the rest of the thread, take it out back & shoot it. Then put Bits' thread back up. If that's what's happened.

So, what's the story with this one? Neutral I'm kinda curious whether my post was deemed objectionable.

It was late, late, late when I posted it. I suppose it's possible someone posted after me, but I'm thinking mine was what got it killed. Sure didn't mean to. If anyone posted after mine, or even saw mine, let's hear it.

Bits' OP was about being denied membership in a video store's rental programme because he isn't Korean. Bits asked if that's SOP in Seoul, which it isn't, in my experience. Real Reality chimed in with a photo of one of the "Americans Not Welcome" coffeeshop signs from 2002, along with -- guess what! -- a link to a newspaper article about something.

After that, other posters (Desultude and Homer, I think it was, but don't quote me on that) pointed out that the photo in RR's post was from three years ago, the implied criticism being that RR reaches too far -- or too far back, in this case -- for his cudgels to belabour the Koreans with.

But Itaewonguy came by, and he said, essentially, "So what? That photo of the sign in RR's post is still a valid reminder of how some people act", but...you know... with a few CAPITALISED WORDS!!! in the middle of his sentences that make me think they're OVER??? though they're more like PAUSES!! as you will find EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!! and maybe even some QUESTION MARKS???? here and there, so you really only know it's over when you RUN OUT OF BREATH at the end the post. Surprised

And then, Dogbert entered the discussion, asking Homer if he might prefer RR show some "NO JAPANESE" signs of a more recent vintage. By this time, no-one was paying much attention to the OP anyway, and I couldn't answer Bits' questions either. So I joined the thread, posting something to the effect that...

I agree that it's important to note what year the "NO AMERICAN" signs went up, but I also share the opinion that the photo which RR posted is as valid a reminder today as any of an incident that was startling and newsworthy three years ago. And being that it was only three years ago, and considering all the Japan-hating these days, and who knows what the next time China revises its official history concerning Kogugryo, I consider these signs as ... well, "signs" of our time.

Then, purely tongue in cheek and stating by no means do I equate the two (though I think this is what got the thread killed), I suggested Korean shopowners might wish to consult American commercial signage from the 1930s and '40s. And I posted three photographs, showing:

1. "REX THEATRE -- FOR COLORED PEOPLE"

2. "FARMERS CAFE" which offers "QUICK LUNCH" for customers who enter the restaurant via clearly marked "WHITE" or "COLORED" doors.

3. A sign hanging on a restaurant window in Lancaster, Ohio, informing patrons that "WE SERVE WHITE TRADE ONLY"

They were very handsome photographs, as generic black & white photos go, of a very ugly time in U.S. race relations, and they can be found in American childrens' history books as valid reminders of how some people have acted.

The mods have looked around and can't find it. Shocked We're mystified as there wasn't anything objectionable about it either.
