The kid (I hesitate to call her a young woman) lives in a society that doesn't understand the need to sleep, and if she can't be enough of an original thinker to figure out what's wrong with her exam-taking approach I'd have no sympathy for her whatsover.

falling asleep absolutely anywhere and everywhere is one of those things Koreans do so well. Its a skill I really envy.

Its not a good excuse during an exam, but some of my students are really cramming for their mid terms and are exhausted.

Maybe they should try teaching a classroom of antipathetic students while having to care for a newborn at home. We're talking bottle feeding every two hours, day and night...and each feeding takes an hour.

If you have reason to believe that the student is just a goof-off, then for sure just let them sink. If, on the other hand, it is a good but totally exhausted student, I see no harm in waking them up.

I should add to this story by telling you that this is a class of first year Med students, many of whom have been abroad, so competition is fierce for the 10 grades of A I am allowed to give out. In the class of 50, there would easily be 20 or more that will qualify. Because of this, I decided to let the chips fall where they may.

I think that Korean students, especially the adults, but it would help to start with the children.....need to learn to be responsible for their own learning. I've never seen people blame everyone else for their failure as Korean students. It most likely begins with the parents who blame everyone except their own child....this teaches the child to blame everyone else....you fail english, well it isn't your fault, the teacher didn't like you, the teacher is boring..it could never be that you didn't actually study or try to participate in class.....the teacher should have went out of his/her way to cater just to you and MAKE you learn... Rolling Eyes She fell asleep during a test...yes I do sympathize that the kids/young adults don't get enough sleep here, but to make exceptions for one student you would have to make exceptions for everyone...they are all in the same boat. Kyrei is right....especially if this girl is in a very competitive class....what would happen in a med school if a student fell asleep during an exam in your home country..? Perhaps if the prof woke you up it would be to ask you to leave...?

Interestingly enough, today in my exams two students fell asleep. I had a grad student to help proctor the exams and his response was to grin and shrug. Both of these student fell asleep by choice though. I saw them wake up, glance at the paper, grimace, and then fall asleep again. When I collected their papers, without anything more than a cursory glance, I could tell that they both failed the exam - but they failed it with flying colours, if that is any consolation.
