For the hours they work, even for Korea, they deserve it.

Don't mean to be combative hypnotist, but do you have first hand experience working in Samsung, or are you just basing your comments on hearsay, beliefs and generalisations.

The distinction should be made between workload and workhours.

Samsung workers have looong hours, like most Koreans, but I'm willing to bet more than a few of those hours are spent sleeping or playing Go Stop on the computer.

I think it would be physically impossible for them to continuously work for all the hours they're in the office - which works out as nearly half a week, per week, I think. I'm not sure whether that's their contracted hours or just what they do.

To some extent you're correct, but there are sacrifices involved in working such long hours even if they're not working hard every single one of them. I don't want to go into any more detail in public since it's probably company confidential...

I taught at Samsung, so I can tell you a bit about their work hours.

They generally start around 7 am, and finish around 5 or 6 pm. If there is still something left to do, it's not unusual for them to be there until 8 pm. Often times, they work on the weekends if there is extra work to finish for the week, but they usually have at least one day off (Sat or Sun). However, they are often encouraged to participate in "community building" activities, such as the Samsung softball team, or things like this.

I figured they were working around 55 hours a week.

Being a veteran of the corporate world in Canada, most likely the bonuses went to a few very experienced senior engineers/researchers, people in sales and most of the executives. Your average Samsung employee most likely saw a marginal increase in salary.
