I've always been under the assumption.. that if you long miss your return ticket.. its just gone.

But recall someone saying they were able to get one after having missed the return portion.

Is that actually true? Just curious.. I'd like to know if there is a remote possibility of that. And how much of a window do you get after the date has passed?

Tiger you should know better than this. It depends upon the duration of the ticket.

If you buy a Bangkok cheapo it's probably gone. 14 day ones like you are bragging about to Tokyo, you would have to the end of the 14 days you bought it on, not the day of the flight. 14 days after you bought it, but some are good for thirty days etc. It depends. But it is the date that you bought it, same with one year.

What was the validity of the ticket...?
Generally you can get a refund for up to a year after the ticket expired.
If the cost of a new ticket is less than the refund value, sure you can get a new one for no charge.
Are you talking about the ticket you got from the US over here...?
Wasn't that only valid for 2 weeks or something...?
Generally the short length validity tix are significantly cheaper than say, one year tickets so I'd be surprised if there's any or little refund value.
Does that make sense...?

Bought it in February with a one week turnaround.. just enough to interview here, see if I get a job or not, and head back to Las Vegas.

I didn't know if it was valid for 2 weeks, 2 months, or 6 months. But I just called Travelocity (where I bought it) and apparently the return portion is LONG GONE! Must have been a real cheap one.. got over here at the last minute for around US$700.

I long gave up on it (on account of never taking the return portion back).. but had this idea tonight I might be able to get back there this June on that portion. Apparently not.

Was it an e-ticket...?
Often the super cheap deals will have "No Refund" clauses.
Possibly otherwise it has some value if you cash it in, but maybe only something like 100 bucks max. by the time they deduct penalties and all that bull shit.
With paper tickets it can take 3 months to get a refund. Not sure what the deal with e-tickets is/are though.

I still used a ticket after it was "expired" however, in my case, this was possible due to the fact that the agent had made a mistake on entering the end date of validity on my ticket. She had marked it down as a six month open return ticket (which I didn't notice when I first inspected the ticket), while it should have been marked as a one year open return ticket. Imagine my surprise when I was denied passage back home after a one year sejour in France, due to this error. I also had no money to buy another ticket. Getting the mess sorted out required a 9 hour wait until my travel agent in Canada came into work and could sort out the situation. By that time, the Northwestern staff had already refused to help me and, unjustifiably, threatened to call security if I returned to their ticket desk, missed my flight and several others, and had spent too many hours imagining myself as one of those people who sell everything in their backpacks and beg in the train station to get money to go home. Until they found out that there was an error in the dates on my ticket validity, there was absolutely no way that they were going to let me get close to a plane.
