Frankly I really miss shovelling snow and my all time favorite mowing the lawn.
I love people whose best friend is their car, and can only make small talk about "How about those Cubbies?" A losing American baseball team. Or these days Pro-wrestling! Or Nascar! Or extreme boxing!
Gee I miss Las Vegas. The art alone, the culture!
The private police forces controled by the casinos, the survelience cameras! The sheer kitsch!
Most of all I think I miss demolition derbies, monster trucks and rural rusting trailer parks, not to mention line dancing. |
Are you prepared to admit, in your bigger, more reflective moments, that you are, in fact, just a tad odd? |

I don't think he is odd. He is just that rare creature- the articulate and reflective man from one of the southern states in the U.S. (or, rarer still, the northerner who likes "demolition derbies, monster trucks and rural rusting trailer parks, not to mention line dancing". Now I think, maybe from Eastern Washington State? Or someplace north of Chicago? |

Years of making, buying and using different chemicals has saturated the mysterious one as you would expect from anybody who got a Phd in chemistry in the 60s and 70s -- I've yet to encounter the man in anything approaching lucidity but he seems happy and I've only ever seen him almost get into a fight once. |

Sounds pretty cool to me. One person's lucidity is another's idiocy. Should have recognized him as a fellow "traveler". |

He's from Iowa. He doesn't like any of that crap. He rarely looks at the board anymore. |

Never been happier than I am in Korea. Good blend of amazing culture, the best food ever, wonderful friends that will always be there for me, and a decent amount of money for not doing too much work.
That said, I can't really be called a lifer anymore, as my husband has no interest in living in Korea, so I probably won't be here forever, after all.

Just curious, but for the people staying for 3 or more years in order to save a boat load of money; how do they plan on sending the money back home when they move back to Canada or the U.S.?
From what I know you can only send $10 million won per year from Korea.
Plus how do you plan to deal with the Canadian or American governments in regards to taxes when you have $50 to $100 thousands saved up in a savings or cheqing account? Don't you have to declare this?

A measly ten million dollars per year???!!!!
Oh, sorry -- you meant Canadian $, didn't you? Never mind.
Endo, you're allowed to send (unless it's changed) 2/3 of your contracted salary out, which I used to do every month on payday. I believe the 10 million won limit is calculated separately from that -- such as "travel expenses" that you might physically carry out on holiday, etc.
Someone will probably chime in with fresher information. I hope. |

Thanks for the response Jongno Guru, but I heard a totally conflicting view when I sent home money last week.
I use KB Bank and the guy said (through the girl who was interpreting for me) that I was only able to send a mazimum of $10 million WON per year.
So was the guy misinformed?

Yeah. Or how about a single trip to the moneychangers? Saves time, no crowds, no cameras, the rate isn't (wasn't) that bad, they don't even want to see your passport, and they might serve you tea.  |
