this hagwon is great.
but i've been here three months now and i'm beginning to get annoyed by some of the kids who sluff in the door twenty minutes late, slump into their chair, slap their book down (if they have their book!), and look like smug little rebel wannabes. spineless jellyfish!
and these guys (guys!) have been doing this since the start! it has nothing to do with me. they did it with the previous teacher. i said to the boss today, 'what's with these guys, coming into class so late and often without their book?'. he was silent for a time, then smiled, and said, 'they're stupid'. ahhahahaaaaaa. the korean teacher, who's diligent and idealistic, looked amused, then a little afraid she was associated with idiots who project their own base natures upon others! haahaaaaaaaa
the boss figures if they are there, if they show up, it's doing them some good. are their mother's rich they can pay tuition knowing their kids show up at half-time? geez
kids showing up extremely late makes for;
-dashing out to make copies of handouts again for the latecomers, or
-gravititating, over time, towards letting them flop in and sit. no boosting around to crank them up to speed, after the interuption of their miraculous appearance

Sounds pretty typical. My boss just commited the ultimate in stupidity this week. We got some new students that we assessed as being level 1 or 2, she put them in level 4 and then after 2 days moved them to a level 5 class. These kids can't say 2 words in English,they can't spell 3 letter words, it's ridiculous. But I already know why it happened. The kid's mother was in there complaining that she didn't want her kid in the lower level classes.. blah blah blah............ Shocked
Of course, now there are going to be further complaints because I have to try and deal with the situation, and of course, "it's always the teacher's fault"! Rolling Eyes

It's a wonder that anyone can learn English given the situation in some of these places.

Try and have a good day.
Cheers

what school do you work for kangnamdragon, I want in. Wow, a boss that actually approaches you for your opinion!
I'm from the old school of thought that says there should be discipline, and a separation between kids and teachers. For example, no kids should be allowed in the teacher room. I mean, you're trying to prepare material, and the kids just run in screaming and yelling, and then you're expected to entertain them like some big brother.... I don't mind chatting with them in the corridor or wherever, though..

What's worse is when the other kids in the class complain to their parents about the low-level kid placed in their midst... and that kid, who can't understand what's going on, becomes a discipline problem.. and then the other kids start leaving.

For that one kid's tuition, the boss is running the real risk of losing several others. But then, recognizing this situation would require long-term thinking. This is not the forte of the hogwon director.

I hear ya on that one "some way gug in." The parents say they don't want their kids in the lower level even when the kids cannot spell H-O-T! You know what I have heard is pretty common? Parents, especially mothers, like to brag to their neighbors or friends about their kids doing so well in school. "My little Jae Young is already in level five." Well, guess what? Jae Young cannot spell his name in English! Funny and sad.
