If you ever get a chance, go down to the local bus station, pick a random place, and get on the bus. What a GREAT experience. I just got back today! The buses in Mexico are great, videos, little stops at taco bars, and I was surprised to find Korean buses just as comfortable. They stop at these road side restaurants that serve HUGE steel bowls of soup, with about 13 side dishes, no joke. The bus drivers are really cool, driving through the mountains you can experience a sense of freedom that the city cannot offer. Near each bus stop their are loads of cheap hotels, and they are happy to see foreigners. I went to Kwang ju, what an awesome place, if you have not made that trip you must! Fresh air, great food, peace of mind!

ha. and i thought i was the only one who did that. my method is to pick the next departure, regardless of destination....unless it's too proximal to daegu.
once a month, it makes for a cool time!

Took the bus to Seoul a couple of weeks ago. Now I remember why I usually drive. I was on of the older buses (you know, the ones that are very noisy and rattle all over the place). I had an upset stomach all day.

I did that once, taking some random boat from Mokpo to this tiny island. It was a great time, however I found out that the boat only returns to the island once you call the Captain. Then you have to hope that he is passing by there later on. Shocked

Fun experience though.

I used to do this a lot as well...it is pretty cool fun.

I love countryside Korea, and have seen some cool places.

However a couple of times I went to places that had maybe 5000 people max, got off the bus, went this is not very exciting and just got back on the next one.

Still a nice day out though.

Its really easy to do if you live in a smaller town and live near the bus station.

It really takes a lot of work to do that in Seoul. You have to make a conscious effort to get to the bus station (a journey in itself).. and then on the bus you are stuck in traffic for at least 30-40 minutes trying to get out of the city on top of that.

I'm gonna try to do that more.

Funny when I worked the Summer camp at JinJu.. nearly everyone did that every weekend.. if someone stayed and did nothing in Jinju.. they were perceived as the unusual one!

Merc,

Good on ya for doing some touring...however, if you REALLY want some freedom....far and above what you've had....

Motorcycle. A real one.

I have the best memories on my bike...much more than the car and truck.

Went by expressway all the way from Sangju to Daegu. So, on the return trip, noticed there were a couple alternate bus routes. Bought my ticket at Daegu buk-bu and went out into the platform. There was a bus sitting there and signed for Sangju. And another next to it, going to Sangju. I didn't want either - found the parking slot for the one I DID want just as a guy approached and helpfully demanded to see my ticket. I knew just what would happen if I let him see it so I refused. (I figured he would have insisted I get on the express bus so that I could get to my destination ASAP, and how could I explain what I really wanted with my limited Korean.) He slid away disgruntled at the rudeness of foreigners just as my bus pulled into its slot. We did go some back roads, and I saw a sign pointing to the "Grave of a loyal cow."

Kinda did that last night.. my friend has a car.. ended up in Seosan of all places.. near Taenan National Park.

Fun just driving around.. Mollipo Beach was surprisingly BIG for a Korean beach.. and saw quite a few beaches over in the Taenan area.. a good road trip.
