I had a couple of those spiders in my first apartment in Korea. It was a bit of a dive.

My first encounter with them was when one dropped out of the ceiling into my light fixture. The light was a large circular ceiling installation, and all the spider could do was run around in the big white bowl, but he was big, and his shadow up there wasn't helping my fear. I was terrified.

Apparently it is bad luck to kill these spiders.

I think I've seen the one(s) you described as well...it was about an inch long (including legs), rather brown and patterned on the back. It was in a children's hakwon where I worked. One of the other native teachers tried to get it to cling to a stick to put it outside, it released a white milky discharge.

If you're going to use bug spray to kill something, bear in mind that most household bug sprays contain pyrethin, a fast-acting organophosphate insecticide and the active ingredient of RAID. However, prolonged spraying will just pollute your indoor environment. My last director used to drive me crazy with the spray can, spraying one spider a full minute or two and FILLING THE ROOM with the stuff. One spritz, like a shot of perfume, will paralyze and kill any arthropod within a minute.

There is a slightly more environmentally friendly way of getting rid of spiders or insects you don't want. Vacuum.

Just for fun, here's a life-size pic of the world's largest spider, the Goliath Birdeater Tarantula of South America. Imagine opening your cupboard under the sink and seeing this!

I agree with the Freezer Burn. Look at tarantulas, sinister and large, but gentle. Now look at the brown recluse or a black widow. Very small, and very dangerous. I wouldn't worry about the big ones. Just put a cup over them and slide a piece of paper under, then throw them out. Spiders are pretty good at taking care of other pesky bugs like huose flies and mosquitos.
