Apparently you've never been to Kangnam station area. It's pretty close to my own personal definition of hell. Over crowded with the worst sort of Koreans ( the whiny, obsessed with checking people out and being checked out type), plus the same complaints of being expensive dirty and dull- like the rest of Kangnam.

You live in the ghetto part of Kangnam then. Around Daechi and Samsung dong (Samsung station/COEX area) people leave you totally alone. But then again, that area is the poshest part of Kangnam.

Yes, it's over-priced and Jong-no is better. However, I haven't have a single hello-nice-to-meet-you-giggle-giggle since I got here. That's not to say that I won't...and I don't know why it is, but I like it. (And no need to start on the "why can't you just say hello" kick, please. That's another thread.)

Good point. I have not, in the 6 months of living in Kangnam (other than around my school ofcourse) had any kids assault me with their hellos. People in Kangnam leave you alone. You can actually walk down the street and just be part of the crowd, left totally alone. Also, waslking around with my wife, hand in hand or arm in arm, doesnt even draw any stares or looks. People say Kangnam is plastic, but atleast its more civilized than other parts of the city. People actually get the concept of personal space and privacy.

I don't really get this as a 'selling point' versus Shinchon/Hongdae or Jongno or Itaewon. Its the same experiences in them - never stand out or get assaulted by hello's in them either.

Its not enough to draw me from the other 3 'better' areas to go to spent my time in 4th place Kangnam instead.

Does anyone else find Daechidong Waygookin a snob. Really it's pretty nasty. Grow up DW. All this 'urgh, poor people smell' and 'gangnam is great because there are no peasannts' etc is pretty horrible crap.

Does anyone else find who to be a what? Laughing What gets me is, DW has recently slammed the suburbs and suburbanites of the West as hopelessly brain-dead and devoid of any culture. And yet here's the guy who praises Kangnam (of all places!) to the high heavens. Kangnam, the most plastic part of this peninsula, where the reigning culture and religion -- the solitary goal and guiding philosophy of life is the shameless worship of Mammon. Sad

Kangnam is an urban environment. Totally different than the suburbs. You still have the stimulation here that is painfully lacking in suburbs. As far as making money, I see nothing wrong with it.

If DW considers Daechi to be so wonderful he must have grown up in a real craphole back home. I get the impression that he was a pimply faced farmboy, universially disliked by his classmates. His time in Korea has given him the attention he craved for back home. I mean what sort of tosser comes onto a forum, and creates a persona of such utter dislike, unless of course this is actually what he is like. What a tool!

Sorry for the abuse, but muppets like you bring out the worst in me.

I dont like being around poor people. There are almost none in Kangnam and then if I see one asking for money, I just ignore them. So I like Kangnam.

kangnam has more beggers than ITAEWON or Hongdae!
those guys hanging out the station begging for money!
Kangnam is dirty! full of street vendors, room salons, flyers everywhere!
rubbish everywhere, but if you are talking about dechidong, bangbaedong, areas more residential areas sure. no beggers..
but if you mean KANGNAM as STATION, APKU, SINSA etc..
they are dirty over priced S holes.. every country needs its beverly hills.
unfortunately for koreans its Chungdam-dong-Apku, KANGNAM ST..

do you mean is kangnam the best for drinking?
NOWAY! its more korean style as in HOFS, SOJU bars, NORBANG, NIGHT CLUBS, COFFEESHOPS etc.. its a place for youngsters to feel cool to hang out. "LETS MEET IN KANGNAM" KANGNAM being its cool to be in kangnam!
you gonna tell your friends lets meet in INSU -dong?
KANGNAM has the big fashion francises, the coffee francises, it is like a VOGUE adverstising magazine in real.. ITS JUST WAY OVER RATED!

you seem to have this idea that money makes you more civilized.
I have been stared at in COEX , I have been stared at in BUNDANG
doesnt matter where you go in Korea! koreans will stare at you.
now many koreans who have lived abroad or been abroad might not stare at you , many younger koreans might not stare..
but to say Koreans in DECHI, or samsung dong dont stare becuase they have money is crazy!

FACT IS.. people in KANGNAM are WANNABIES! they think there are cool becuase they are paying 7000 won for a coffee.. when most of them cant even afford it anyway! next time in kangnam ST . DW look around at your so called rich people! they are mainly 18-30 year olds spending daddys money or just part time workers, students etc.. trying to be cool !
most of them have no money! the realestate is over priced there..
you want to see money!????
go to BUNDANG or ILSAN! thats where the real money is!!

one more thing. I have been to dechidong many times!!
ummmmm there is nothing there accept overt priced apartments!!!
which are 20 years old!!
I think you need to visit bundang or ilsand dechidong waygookin!
then you will see where the rich people live!
