Police Arrest 13,000 Internet Gamblers
"The suspects range in age from around 30 to 70. We have selected people who spent more than 25 million won or paid more than 100 times, to face criminal charges," police said.

It doesn't make much sense to this American, because I understand that my country is unusually tight about gambling. I also would've expected Korea to be rather lenient. |

Remember the actress who slashed her wrists and hung herself? I heard she did it because her mother gambled her into horrible debt. what was her name? something?
edit-- . and yeah, i feel kinda bad for calling the deceased " something." On someone's blog it said the mother gambled herself 20,000,000,000 won into debt. it's people like that that make gambling illegal in some places (if that blog can be believed). |

They don't like it because the money is going offshore. |

Which explains why they have legal casinos for foreigners. |

I would say if there is any country where gambling should be illegal it should be Korea. The way society currently operates I think the chances for gambling addiction would be pretty high. Looking at the amount of time spent playing PC games, the high credit card debit Koreans owe and the long hours people work I think making gambling legal would create a huge problem here in a very short amount of time.
Congratulations to the Korean Government for making pragmatic decisions in the interests of it's citizens. |

Crossing the street at a pedestrian crossing when the lights are red - biggest gamble you make, everyday. |

Yeah, all at once? They always taunt us with headlines like that, don't they.
You tell me you've arrested 13,000 people, then I want to see all 13,000 of them doing the "Headless Horseman" dance on KBS TV news, damnit, just before they're thrown in the pokey.
The article starts off promisingly enough:
Police have caught about 13,000 people who habitually visit overseas Internet gambling sites, including a diplomat and a national university professor.
But then comes the inevitable let-down:
Of the seven facing imminent arrest, Yu, a 49-year-old unemployed man, squandered more than 100 million won.
Man!!! We was robbed agin! ?? |
