How many processes (in Windows Task Manager) are running on your system right now?

I have 42.

I'm running W2K. I have 22. XP is probably going to have more on average.
You have to go through them and learn what they are if you want to pare them down.

Use Msconfig or Regedit, be very careful when you do. There is also this great little app I use

Free and does a good job, if your not sure what it does just google it and you will find the answer my young grasshopper.
After you do this just restart the PC.

I have 22 processes running, and that's including msn messenger, wireless internet, and opera.

I used Black Viper's tweaks for XP and suggestions to turn off the unimportant stuff, but I just checked and it looks like his site is down.

However, someone archived his page, and here is what he has to suggest....don't use msconfig or regedit. Go through the "control panel/administrative tools/services" and you can read what each process does.

Also StartupCop is nice for only allowing certain programs to run on startup.

Kind of a shortcut....type "services.msc" into the "run" window on the start menu....without the quotes, of course.

I agree with wrench....regedit is a good tool as well, but different from the services in a big way, and not for the novice.

I use registry mechanic as an all-round checkup utility, but get in there from time to time to check for bundled apps...programs that install behind other ones.

there's an application called Wintasks Pro that's really useful for seeing what's running on your PC.
It will tell you what all of the valid ones do, and for those that shouldn't be running, you can disable or block them.
