Hi there:

Okay, there are so many job ads out there, I'm getting lost as to the standard application procedures for Korea. I have just completed my Canadian passport application, but it could take up to 4 weeks before my passport is in the mail. But, I now have my degree parchment, which I have to get a notarized photocopy made. So, do I have to wait until I actually have my passport in hand, before I can apply? I know Korea is big on the photograph you send, but I can't send my passport photos, because I have to send them into Ottawa (both of them) in order to get my passport issued. So, what gives here? I'm a little confused. Am I still able to start sending out my resume to recruiting companies (if I can find the name of the one in Vancouver) and to schools, or do I have to wait? My family wants to see me sending out resumes or else they don't think I'm actively looking for work, even if I'm having to wait for my passports.

I applied (quite easily) before receiving my passport. If the listing requests a passport scan, substitute a photo. Then if they come back at you asking for passport, explain that you've applied. I simply scanned in the receipt showing the date I applied and informed them the approximate date I would be receiving it. No problems.

When are you wanting to start teaching? If it's not for a couple of months anyhow, then do more research now, and less applying at the beginning. Most companies don't hire several months in advance. Just what I found most expeditious.

You can apply for jobs without your passport. They will want to see a scanned copy of it, which is necessary for your employer to give to immigration here in Korea to process your visa. But, I was the same as merilee...just told them I had applied, and I'd send it when I could. (Actually I had an old one that had 2 months validity left on it, so I originalyl sent them that one). If you're getting your visa done after you arrive in Korea (iw/ the famous visa run) then I'm not sure how mandatory it is. Possibly mandatory, I would not be surprised if some schools do a criminal check on you. (And if they don't, I think it would be wise for hagwans to add that little process, considering most of us are hired based on one photo and a brief phone interview...)

As for your passport in Canada, you can get it done in as little as 3 days. Yes, even after the extra checks put in since 09/11. You pay an extra fee (I think $50 to have it in 5 days, $100 for 3 days). With the extra mailing time to Vancouver it's still no more than 2 weeks, as they send it ExpressPost.

To have your visa processed in Canada and have it before you arrive here, it takes 3 days at the Ottawa Consulate. Add mailing time, and it's 2 weeks max (again, use Express Post).
