Hi there,
I'd like to hear your ideas for what you (would) do with classes that are really big. For instance, as part of my job I teach at a girls' middle school and each English class has 49/50/51 students. Absolutely ridiculous in my opinion but not much I can do about it. There is no room to move at all because the desks are crammed in every available space. Also, I only go to that particular school twice a term, so I tend to do a one-off lesson, on some random topic, as I don't even know what they've done or where they are in their school textbooks. The girls are generally very good-natured and pleasant so I don't really have many discipline worries. I have been putting them in groups (7 x 7) and working with them that way, but would love some more ideas.
So, what are your thoughts? Any ideas?
Thanks

They are competitive, so make each group a team and play a game. Something easy, because, no doubt, there are mixed levels. Let each team choose a team name and write it on the board. Then write a category on the board like fruit, transportation, or the letter S, and have the team work together and write as many words as they can. Very simple, but my students always love this.
