The 1st Jeju International Ultimate Frisbee Tournament was a smashing success with much fun had by players and fans alike. The only thing missing was an almost complete lack of local presence. Jeju is always trying, or seems to be trying, to promote its many attributes to the foreign market. Yet, here, an opportunity falls right into the laps of the Publicists That Be and it is studiously ignored. Teams from all over Korea, as well as from China and Japan, showed up for the event. The teams consisted mostly of foreigners working in these countries. It would have been an ideal circumstance for the local tourism board to put together welcome packets, perhaps throw a modest reception, for a local TV crew to show up and film the waygooks having fun. Minimum effort, minimum expense and maximum exposure. But these things did not happen. Does anyone else find this strange?

Where can I buy a good disc in Korea. I've been checking the local sport stores, but have since given up.

Is my best bet just ordering one online?

Did the organizers of the tournament notify the tourism board or whomever in Jeju before hand though? Knowing the local teams here in the states, no one other than the invited teams was told anything.

How are the tournaments? Kind of hardcore, or more relaxed?

considering that there was sponsorship from the Seogwipo government and the World Cup practice facility was used for the tournament, people in the government knew what was up.....

There was an MBC camera crew at the fields most of Saturday. They interviewed several people and shot enough footage to do a report that night on the 6 o'clock news. If anyone has the footage, make it available online!

time_101, there are hardcore and relaxed teams at every tourney. Some go to bed at 9 p.m. to 'prepare' for the next days' games, some party all night and drag their hungover butts to the fields. Hat tournaments (where players are mixed up and entirely new teams are made) are a great way to ensure no one takes it too seriously, and foster a fun, safe learning environment where experienced players take it upon themselves to introduce newbies to this greatest of all games. And lucky for you, the Daejeon Hat is just around the corner (first party Friday June 3rd, games 4th-5th, Monday the 6th is a holiday). Watch this space and www.koreaultimate.com for details.

My girlfriend went down for the tornament and had to come back early. She wants to know who won.

Korea over Shanghai 15-13. Korea goes up 7-2 early, then Shanghai runs 3 straight before Korea takes half 8-5. Shanghai closes the gap at 9s, then 10s, 11s, 12s, then breaks take the lead at 13-12. Korea steps the D up and rattles off 3 straight points to win. One of the best Asian finals in recent memory.

Korean Mike gets the Male MVP and Hermine Wong from Shanghai wins the Female MVP. Daejeon wins the spirit award.

As usual when there is a group of more than four foreigners in one place a TV crew did indeed show up. Still, the event was not exploited nearly as much as it could have been, and would have been almost anywhere else. But, perhaps that was a good thing. As the spousal unit was under the weather for most of the weekend we only got the fringes of this event. And even that was enough to make a Las Vegas Madam blush.
