Apparently immigration is not allowing Canadians from certain areas in Canada to receive E-2 Visa's. I'm not exactly sure of the reasons but this is what they told my supervisor. My girlfriend also phoned to check if this was the case and (at least in Seoul, Mok-Dong Immigration office) they said this was true. It has something to do with the "French" areas of
Canada. There is apparently a list of "districts" that they won't approve Visa's for...sorry I can't give more information but getting anything out of Immigration is difficult at the best of times.

Ha... as if many Canadians would even bother getting an E-2 these days, anyway! Now these guys from this area will just teach here on a tourist visa. Big fat hairy deal.

If it were true, it would be a real laugh. As I've mentioned many times, all they have to do is ditch the 6 month E2 Canadians get, and they'd cut their illegal teaching problems by 70% or more. But it ain't gonna happen, because too many rich and powerful Koreans send their children abroad to Canada. They don't want to piss off the Canadians and have them respond in kind.

So it's all a big joke, really.

CLG: I couldn't get a New Zealand passport before I left for Korea....

I once had a clerk who got all freaked out because I had a Canadian passport and a New Zealand degree. Apparently they thought it must be a fake because of the difference in coutnries

Look I'm not here to troll, just thought I'd give out some useful info. on this issue to people who might need it. Believe it, don't believe it - it makes no difference to me.
I'm not even Canadian but I thought it may be useful to others who might consider coming to Korea. So why don't you "Manner of Speaking" phone Immigration and check if you're so concerned about the validity of my post!

If it's true it must be a very new policy because I know people from Quebec that got visas a couple of months ago. If it is true, it won't be long before someone speaks up about it in Canada. It's not as though it's a Francophone only area.

I wonder if the South Africans are getting the same treatment. I've met far more teachers who's first language was Africaans than French here.

Immigration just needs to put certain Franchopone schools on a watch list instead of putting the whole province off-limits. That type of logic relates closely to the idiot generalizations that Derek spouts off all the time. Or I could just say; he is becoming more Korean in his thinking than he has realized.

Okay, I can now confirm it. Today I visited Immigration on an unrelated matter and took the time to ask an officer in the VISA section about French-Candian E-2's . He confirmed that of the 16 May the regulations had changed for Canadians of French extraction. From now on it will nearly impossible for them to get E-2 visa's except in what he called "exceptional" circumstances. These regs. are so new that normal immigration workers do not know them...so if you want to double check make sure you speak to someone in the VISA section.

As a sidenote - one of the problems I have noticed at Dave's is when it comes to matters of importance where FACTS are needed there are too many OPINIONS on whether the the OP is valid or not. This is extremely unhelpful and just clouds the issue making it difficult for people who actually need the necessary information.

So I suggest those of you who have an OPINION on whether this true to go make a separate post. Anyone who has FACTUAL information (for example peppermint "If it's true it must be a very new policy because I know people from Quebec that got visas a couple of months ago") is more than welcome to post. Responses like Homer's "OP: just a load of horse manure" are not wanted.
