I make more based ont the fact that I only work 28hrs/week and no Saturdays or Sundays. My Korean friends all work 11 hrs/day and Saturdays. They have children and are happy to have their jobs. However, I wouldn't trade places with them any time. Basically I make more per hour than them and get to spend more time with my wife and my puppy. |

Did you earn a degree from Korean university? Is your educational background of similar value as the educational background of your Korean friends? |

Better. Much better. I graduated from a Canadian Uni with lots of international students. Even in Canada I made more but I was working all the time. Mutual funds , stocks and insurance. My cell bill was paid by the company but it was over 600 CDN per month. I never went a day without ten calls from clients. Luckily, Enron was not in our push section. |

If you figure out my hourly wage and benefits, way more. Especially with five months paid vacation every year, and overtime if I work during the vacations.
(edited to make sense. )

My secretary earns a bit less than that. But then, I pay myself waaay less than I pay her. But then, my company earns much more. But then, I pay a lot in taxes. But then, I don't tend to spend much. But then, I have unearned income sources. But then, they're not all in Korea. But then, some are. But then, I don't generally touch that money. But then, sometimes I do. But then.... |

DESULTUDE has the best job in the world. And they have figured out how to squeeze 5 months into a single month. SHHH!!! don't tell the evil Korean masters or all of the hagwon guys will be working forever to get out from under that one year contract.
(sorry I know it was a simple typo, but I couldn't resist...) |

This obvious fact always seems to escape RR's attention. And he never does post what the average salary of a Korean hagwon teacher is. Why compared averages at Samsung to the hagwon industry? At my company, 1 million a month seems to be a good wage for the Korean teachers. One Korean teacher looking for a job at our place wanted 1.3 million and, gosh, was laughed out of the building.
My GF works for 1.7 million in a trading company, starts at 8:30 am and works until 9 pm 4 nights a week. And she works most Saturdays. |

Money, money, money...
It drives me nuts...
I made more than the average Canadian salary when I worked in Canada. I worked in IT mgt and worked my ass of for 15 hours a day. I let all other aspects of my life suffer.
After about 7 years of that I asked myself what the heck I was doing...I quit and moved to Korea where I was making less than my after tax income from Canada. I was working 15 hours a week. I was much happier.
Now I am working in the Middle Easy (not a typo). I am working 17 hours of contact teaching per week and the rest of the time on-site for a 38 hour work week. I find it more rewarding than when I was teaching in Korea, both financially and (...).
I would have no objections to going to Prague and teaching for $600 a month. It is a beautiful city.
I get in this fight at least once a week at work when the "old timers" start with "the only reason people are here is for the money and anyone that tells you otherwise is in denial or a liar"...(BS)
If you aren't happy in life, you are doing the wrong things.
Some people don't have a choice. Most of us are well-educated. (in spite of how it appears in some of our posts ) We can make changes. Being unhappy for long periods is just sad. |
