ahhh but just imagine if there were.....and they were all standing on each others shoulders and each holding a half empty can of tuna in their left hand (right hand for those from southern hemisphere).... well that would be a pretty highb stack of people holding tuna....... this has no meaning...... except for possibly indicating a need for a new girlfriend.....(or maybe just a repair patch for my current one....) |

In my 3.5 years in korea I have only ever been to Incheon once....
Every other time I have managed to come back in through Busan(Gimhae), there at least 25 to 30 flights that go out of there every day, granted mostly to China and Japan but just transfer through Tokyo or Osaka.....

Yangyang is a funny excuse for an international airport. A colossal misspending of govt funds too -- someone pulled some strings.
Sokcho (half an hour away) used to have its own airport with daily flights to Seoul. Granted, it had a short runway & flights were cancelled when the weather wasnt perfect, but we had Gangneung Airport, an hour away & all-weather, as a backup.
Yangyang superseded them & they both shut down. Beautiful building. Capable of handling 2,000,000 passengers a year & in fact Korea's 3rd largest airport.
But almost as soon as it was up & running someone decided flights to Gimpo werent cost effective & they were all cancelled. Now KAL operates one(!) flight a day to & from Busan only. Thats it!
They did run a promotion during winter vacation though. Flight package from Yangyang to Japan -- 5 days, 5 cities -- top-name hotels, spas & a cruise included -- for one million won. I'm kicking myself for not checking it out -- colleagues had a great time.
Maybe on offer again this summer. Heavily subsidized just to justify the "international" part of the airport name. If a brief deluxe glimpse of Japan appeals, you might want to keep your ears open. |

But, I repeat, on long weekends book well ahead of time otherwise you will be left out in the rain.
Simple question of limited time off and high population density. |

| I have a question about holidays: is there a week-long holiday in July in Korea? I'm a bit confused because my summer program at Sogang is supposed to be 10 weeks, but the program goes from June 9-August 31, which is 11 weeks. Anyone who has done Sogang's summer term know? I would like to find a cheap way to get to Japan (either flying from Seoul to Tokyo to visit friends or taking the hydrofoil from Pusan to Fukuoka, then down to Kagoshima to go back to where I used to live and visit old friends). |

Yes, the last week of July is usually a holiday and it is pretty crazy so if you are going anywhere BOOK NOW!!!!. There will be no tickets left soon, if not already booked out.....
I went to Kagoshima, nice city but Sakurajima was a bit of a letdown..... |

Cheongju has daily flights to to the major cities in NW China and multiple flights a day to Jejudo and flights to Japan once in awhile.
It's the closest airport to me here in Yeoju, so I've used it twice now; once to go to Japan and once to go to Jejudo.
It's a dual use airport (military and civilian), so your airplane may be sharing tarmac space with a jet or bomber. |

This could be true though, airlines organise their schedules according to two "Seasons" winter and summer- so Summer 05 lasts until October 31 this year, if you tried to book a flight for November 1 you'd be out of luck. |

Okay...so if I want to book a cheap ticket to Tokyo for the last week of July, where should I look? I'm in the U.S. now but will be in Korea in two weeks. Where are the best deals to be had? Online or with certain travel agents?

Wrong, it's hovering at about 48, and will NEVER reach 50 because of the low rate of fertility in Korea. (1.16 fertility rate as of 2004). Korea has a rapidly aging population and low births... the population will be decreasing by 2030 or so. |

Maybe. But my experience with Korean travel agents is similar to those of Mr. Moldy. I became so frustrated with them that I abandoned them entirely in favour of the online services, tourexpress (and its Samsung Card twin, samsungtne.com) and webtour.co.kr. |
