I kind of got the feeling on my lil trip to Busan that teaching near one of the beaches would be pretty fun. |

Yeah, there are openings on pusanweb.com for jobs around Haeundae beach which, as we all know, is a long sandy beach within the bustling city (Korea's 2nd largest) of Pusan. Foreigners can often be seen walking along the beach with the expanse of sea, sand and sky confusing them out of their doldrums; they forget they are here to work with the sand between their toes, eyeing potential friends, maybe even romantic involvements, who knows?
Plus, for extra excitement, there are other beaches near there. People can surf, use a wakeboard, kitesurf. I mean really, that's just too much fun, isn't it?
Or you could go get island-locked on Cheju and be exquisitely bored. I've never lived and worked there, but I can vouch for the Pusan/Ulsan coast area as better than any place I've lived and worked (lived in Kwangju, Seoul, Chuncheon, Cheonan).
Yeah, the beach and sand, fresh wind off the sea, night, having a beer and sand between the toes. Very kickback, that. |

I believe Seoul is overrated. You'll spend more. The people are not friendly. It's crowded, noisy and hectic as can be. Most western amenities are in Seoul, that's the good side. And you don't feel like a monkey as much there. But as a single dude used to the country now, give me a smaller place outside Seoul. And in the sticks you can say hello with your lousy Korean. The people are much nicer in the sticks. Seoulites are often uptight, pretentious snobs. Apparently newfound wealth or just money in general spoils people.

Why are poor people so much nicer than the wealthy? A good question. Ask your local sociologist.

Definetely without a doubt Seoul. I've lived in Seoul, Busan and briefly JinJu (my brief stint in a small Korean town).
On my visits to other cities (Daegu, Daejeon, GwangJu, etc.).. they also have their bars and clubs and everything.. but I don't know.. just not the same feeling as going out in the evening in Seoul.
For Busan.. Haeundae Beach is really nice.. especially as a tourist. For going out and having fun as a 'younger single guy'.. I'd still say that Seoul would beat out anywhere in Busan though.
One thing that Seoul has for more than anywhere else.. is the sheer amount of universities. Young Koreans from all over Korea come to Seoul and live outside of their parents constant parental control. Thats one thing that bugged me when I lived in Busan - nearly all my students and most Koreans I'd met down there always had to call their parents (even when they were in their late 20s to see if they could stay out a little later). |

Again I have to say Seoul is overrated. If you got a buddy or two it doesn't matter much where you are. Seoul is good to buy stuff or eat western grub sometimes. But if you are alone Seoul will be as lonesome as the moon. But in a smaller town with a tight-knit community, it is easier to make friends, western and Korean. Small towns overall, I believe, are better to live in. One just needs a few people to talk to. But that can be done. In Seoul everybody is an hour away. I have had buddies in Seoul while in Seoul myself, yet rarely saw them because it's too big. We'd need to arrange a time and date. And at 3 in the morning you will just wait for daylight if your home is 30 minutes or more on the train. |

Anyone living in Jeolla-do or Kyungsam nam-do? The ladies in Seoul who came from there used to seem so much more attractive to me. Are they more conservative in those areas? |

Jajadude, it sounds like you'd be happier in Jeju-do. |
It sounds like it... but I don't think jajadude is really happy anywhere for too long. Poor guy. |

I liked living in Busan, although the traffic drove me crazy. If you're going to live there, try to live next to a subway stop! Haeundae is a great place to visit, but I would maybe look for a job elsewhere in the city and go there in the evenings and/or weekends. My coworker worked in Haeundae and was not treated or paid well by his employer; these are premium jobs, and there's always someone else who will take your position...
But the costs of living are lower in Busan than in Seoul. Personally, I like Busan women (well, I'm marrying one...) They're more aggressive and less Hello-Kitty cutesy than Seoul women, at least to me.
