| Korean society possesses the approximate subtlety of a SWAT team, and the architecture is egregious, even soul-deadening, as a previous poster mentioned. But Korea has no monopoly on tack. In the USA, there are more plastic flamingoes than real ones. You can look it up. How's that for tasteless? |

| Nouveau riche are the same everywhere, lots of money but no taste. Same goes for America, old money generally have vastly better house decor than self-made people (in addition to generally being huge assholes, but that's another questions). There's very very very little old money in Korea so pretty much all the rich people here are insanely tacky. Apparently this sort of thing is even worse in China since there's even less old money in China than in Korea for obvious reasons. Give Korea a generation of so and they'll start catching up to Japan in style, which should be interesting to see. |
You hit the nail on the head. Though, I would have to say that it is usually the people of the nouveau riche are usually much more poorly behaved and snobby than those from old money. They generally brag more, show more flash, and are more demanding and rude than people of old money. |
Right. In my home town there's a shit load of summer houses owned by insanely rich people. People like the Rockefellers are generally fairly well-liked and people like Martha Stewart are hated with a passion.
And of course just about all Korean rich are nouveau riche |

Having spent time in both Korea and the U.S... white trash people and their homes I've seen in the U.S beat Koreans in tackiness any day...
For whoever mentioned Andre Kim as the "best they can do"... you must've missed it when Jiwon Park and Y&K had big write-ups in American Vogue, had successful shows in New York, and Barney's buyers stock them regularly... but then again, I don't expect any fashionista to be hanging out on this board. |

| Every country has beauty. Korea is small but has some too. Taiwan is tiny and has some gorgeous scenery. The US and Canada are among the most beautiful countries on the planet. They are big and include a lot of sights. |

True, but they could do better about protecting it from the swarms of refreshment and plastic-toy-junk stalls that set up right in the middle of spectacular views, spoiling much of that preciously rare beauty Korea has.
I don't mean this to be a Korea-bash. But they really need work on this if they want to attract international tourists. Other countries have figured this out. But Koreans themselves don't seem to be bothered by rows of stalls selling tacky crap right in the middle of their natural treasures, and until they are, it will continue. |

I'm not sure if this falls under tacky, but it does fall under shoddy. I live in a brand new apt.........first person in. I finally had to superglue the screws to the toilet seat because who ever installed the seat did not bother to include the rivets (that might be the wrong word), so the screws kept coming loose.............like loose as falling on the floor. Superglue did the trick
Unfortunately, it seems that they did not secure the toilet tank properly. I just hope I'm not there on the day it decides to fall off

Well my "partner" (yes, I said PARTNER), Raoul, went out with me last night in this catchy little ensemble:
