Wow...seriously?! Sorry man....doing that should be a really harmless thing! Very odd that it would black out on you.

I don't know what to say.....all you did was right click on the desktop, select "properties" and then "advanced"?

Oh my.... Shocked I have never heard of that procedure causing problems....I do it 3 or 4 times per day to access my color profiling....

No, no, that's certainly not all that I did, but I can't really remember what I did, and everything begin in Korean makes it even more difficult to say exactly what I did. I clicked on some pull down tab and there were 2 options. I clicked on the one that wasn't highlighted and hit comfirm and that's when it happened.

If it's a memory issue you should just hit start> run> type 'msconfig' and bust away almost everything in the list. You don't need most, if anything. The startup list will be on the last tab (far right) of the msconfig program. Click apply (right button). Press ok. It'll bring up some junk about restarting. Click ok, restart. Then when it reboots remember to click the checkmark in the box that comes up. Most people don't even know about that. Speeds your system up nicely. Plus it could be another piece of software running in the background that's causing your problem. google the word 'startup list" if you want to find out what everything is in that list. I think pacs-portal.com has a good list. Remember to clean up disk space and defrag from time to time too.

If it's a driver issue. Download the correct drivers. Boot in safe mode and blow away all your drivers for whatever device isn't working correctly. Then, install the correct driver. Sometimes you'll have ghost drivers that aren't shown unless you boot in safe mode.

Also if your video isn't coming up because of a change you might have made by accident, boot in safe mode. Start> run> type msconfig again. and system restore to a time when your computer was working. The system restore button will be on the first page of the msconfig. The button to the left with the (C) in brackets. Just keep nexting, pick a bold date and next some more.

safe mode is usually f5, f7, or f11. Just keep mashing them when your computer makes the beep on startup.

hope something helps ya.

Taking your advice, I would kill my firewall, AV, sound...heck, everything that starts when I boot....not good.

Additionally, services should never be shutdown via this panel....always in the services.msc command window....these too need to be treated with some care, as they can make or break functionality.

Besides, it's not a RAM issue anymore....he bought some., as you know, having read throught the thread completely. We also went through the driver thing, which led to the current impass of having a black screen.

There is no need to go into safe mode (FCool in order to remove video drivers. The big guns have really gotten their act together in the "package" department with drivers, and now they remove themselves quite well. I switched brands, which used to entail the "safe mode" thing and various "destroyer", 3rd-party software programs that hunt for those lone, stray files that never quite were uninstalled....those days are happily gone.

I threw in my ATI card after using the Nvidia uninstaller, and viola!

zappadelta...I didn't know you were in Korean there. May I ask why? It's a new system, yes? I think you had the option to get English Windows...

By removing everything in the startup you can start the process of elimination. If the device works correctly afterwards then you can assume its something in the startup. If it's still 'jiggy' then you can assume it's not.

It's just my way of doing things. Whenever I remove drivers I go into safe mode. Even though the 'big guns' might have changed how drivers are supposed to be removed, as we know, computers don't always perform the way we want (or supposed to).

Just throwing some suggestions out. But I've been out of the computer TS scene for a while, so I don't claim to know that much.. I just handle my own laptop now. I like my dell.

FORMAT & RECOVER!

Well, how can I even begin to fix the thing if I can't see anything? I mean the Windows XP startup screen comes up, and the system sounds like its going to kick into action, then darkness.

zappa...mate, this is your big chance to get Windows in English and start with a fresh slate. Format that thing. I haven't a clue what you clicked and so help is hard to do.

I will PM you...

I got a new (for me) computer yesterday. It's a nice machine, but when I scroll with the wheel, it pages down and up in kind of a melting type motion. I don't like this, I just want it to go up and down. How can I fix this?

I don't know if this relates to your situation, but you can turn scrolling on/off etc. by going to display properties>appearance>effects

Let us know what happens on this. It's an interesting one, to say the least. Sorry if any of my ideas are too elemental, but...

Is this a laptop or a desktop? If it's a laptop, sometimes you can get software glitches to go away by taking the battery out. I doubt that's going to help with this video problem, though.

I've lost track of whether you have an XP disk or not-- in any language. Replacing the operating system or installing a new operating system may get you over this hurdle.

This story reminds me of one that a coworker tells about the old days. A client had pretty much the same complaint and it turned out that he'd set the color of his characters and his background color to black.

My best guess is that you may have accidentally set the screen resolution too high for your computer to handle. I checked Google to find a way to resolve that, but I'm not having any luck figuring out the right key words.

I fthe screen res is too high, get it hooked up to a laptop that will deal with high-res and lower it.

Ususally if one has selected a higher-than-the-monitor-can-deal-with res, it will give some kind of message, then reset it back to the original. However, without the correct monitor files, Windows may not know what is too high and it just shut off.

Another option is if the graphics card has an s-video out, hook an s-video up to your TV (which hopefull supports s-video in) and the graphics card will automatically adjust for a TV display. This will allow you to do something...like uninstall the graphics card and reboot...this will of course be in a low-resolution uopn reboot as windows looks for drivers.

Question

That S-video idea is a pretty good one.

I wonder what would happen if he took the video card out, rebooted the computer, shut it back down, put the video card back in and then booted it up again.

This is what he said he did: "I clicked on some pull down tab and there were 2 options. I clicked on the one that wasn't highlighted and hit comfirm and that's when it happened." And it was in Korean, too, so he couldn't read what he was doing. Sounds an awful lot like screen resolution settings or something similar in the properties area.

I wonder if any of you actually read entire posts before offering advice.

It only has 224 MB of RAM, maybe this is the problem.

I have yet to this day never seen a desktop MB with an S-Video out when the onboard card was only 32Mb! Infact I have never seen an S-Video out on a desktop MB! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Me thinks the onboard card may have been craping out, then died. Why?

Actually, I am a computer support professional. It would violate union rules for me to actually read an entire post before answering. Ditto problems I answer over the phone, where I'm supposed to cut the user off and just make a guess before telling him I'll get back to him a week from Tuesday-- and I'm not saying which Tuesday.

Mmmm......delicious feet, mate?

I don't know where to begin, so I will assume you are totally joking, from start to finish in your highly comedic, if not a bit over-the-top, post.

I have been helping since the first post....if I didn't read, how could I continue? 224MB of RAM? Where did you get this? Onboard what?

Hehe....ok...it must be a joke. Thanks for the laugh.
