The foreigners I took over for were dead beats, they didn't pay for their gas bill for 2 months and during the winter months they can rack up fast. When I got my first bill for gas it was about 180K I gave the bill to the school to handle the matter because I am not about to pay for some one elses usage. Now it took 3 month for the school to do anything and during the 3 months I used about 40k worth of gas. I tried to pay my part but apparantly in Korea you can't just pay part of bill you need to pay the whole damned thing. As I said I gave the bill to the school for the last 3 months and last one scared them cause there was a disconnection notice. They finnaly paid for it but theydecided to subtracted 220k from my paycheck, which frankly makes me furious for two reasons. Reason one; Its not my gas bill, two I explained this to the director like 3 times and I got no results. grrr

yeah sounds familar. I had that happen in my first job with a phone.

Also had an instance where a so called friend left her apartment in a total mess (four hours of cleaning) and didn't bother to cancel off her bills.

That's why schools are asking for deposits.

It might be a good idea to put in one of the Faqs that the day you move in to you new place you demand your school call all the utilities and get the current amount due (you can do that here).

This way, you know exactly what you owe.

Ever wonder if they paid the director the bills, but the director didn't pay them because he knew he could sucker the next newbie into it.

At my first academy we had to submit the bills to the director and he would pay them, often he would not pay my cell bill and even though it was deducted from my pay. We had spreadsheets of what my deductions were and my monthly take home. They were used more than eight times and I was never wrong.

I had the same thing happen my first year here. I went in and talked to the director and she told me I should pay it. I slammed my hand on the desk and yelled a bit. The next day they gave me my cash back with apologies.

It is a stupid thing about Koreans. Sometimes you have to overreact in order to get any action.

I was told it's Korean custom that you pay your first month's utilities bill, even though you weren't living there. It's never happened to me, but I remember some Korean person telling that they had to pay that bill when they moved into their new place. Maybe somebody else can better explain it, since I don't remember the exact details.

Thres loads of deadbeat westerner "teachers" around unfortunately. Korea certainly draws them..not as bad as vietnam or cambodia, but its up there.
