My friends went to the local GIC building the other day and mentioned something about taxes. They think we might be getting ripped off.

There are 6 Canadian teachers in total. We all make 1.9 million, and lose 100,000W in taxes (5%). We don't have healthcare or anything else.

I've heard some different things on taxes, most people say it should be around 3%. Is this correct? What's the best way to go about getting taxes back if so - confront my employer first?

Has anyone had similar experiences with this. We are all getting close to our contracts end, so I would hate to let this start a bad situation.

400k doesn't seem worth too much if it means losing my bonus.

Can anyone point me to a document that shows the figure of what an employer should be taking in taxes?

Depends on exactly on much you make, but most of us poor waegukin English Teachers fall into the 3.5% tax bracket.

According to Korean National Tax Service your total taxes should be 25k on a salary of 1.9mil.

That web site also lists the phone numbers for contacting an English speaker at the Tax Service. You'll need your employeer's business number to get anywhere though.

Mostly likely your hackwon owner\slave master is simply pocketing the amount she takes out for taxes and not sending anything to the government.

ok... so I havent actually finished my first month, but Ive been told that the last teacher paid 100,000 won per month (based on 2,000,000 salary), and that Id be paying the same.

I just checked out that website (above), and it said I should only be paying about 29,000.... is this correct???

Can someone please tell me their tax figures? and based on what salary?

Ive also heard the tax rate depends on where you are working... is this correct?

Income tax is income tax and does not matter where you are in Korea. Anyone who tells you different is either a liar or ignorant.

On a 2 mil salary you should only pay about 29,000

If you add on the resident tax its only another thousand a month...maybe a llittle more.

It seems to be yet another scam of greedy hogwan owners. Scam 3X the tax and pocket the difference from the stupid waygookin.

Contact the labour board and tax office.(if you are overpaying you will get a refund at years end...if you apply for one) if not put your foot down!

salary 2 mil a year. 100,000 won deducted. 70,000 won pocketed by greedy hogwan owner. multiply by 12 t comes out to be 840,000 won. Thats some serious change.
