what a bunch of crap! how many of you othes have cnn international? i really can't stand it, but it's one of four television stations i get out here. one of the othes is sbs, which i never watch. i've got two movie channels, but unless i'm lucky enough to catch an english (language) movie at its beginning that isn't total garbage, i usually keep cnn on as background.
it just seems to me that they're letting their journalists get a little too big for their britches. leading the crap pack is christiane amanpour. those ads they run with her talking about why she's so important really grate at me. 'i thnk our job is to change the world for the better' or some such rubbish. pardon me if i'm wrong, but isn't that pretty much the opposite of their job?
i'd give second place to the guy who was covering the tsunami, but i forgot who it was. he was like 'as a journalist, i'm supposed to remain objective (clearly he and christiane went to different journalism schools), but i got caught up in the spriit of charity, and was compelled to do my part'... again, i'm misquoting, but that was the gist of it. too bad they weren't starved for fertilizer over there.
a distant third goes to richard roth. the only beef i have with him is his ad for his show. i think it's called 'diplomatic liscense' or something. i've never seen the show, but the ad for it is just atrocious. it's just so lame. 'the UN has a lot of doors, and one man has the key to open all of them'... whatever. but the best (read: worst) part of the ad is the end where he's swiftly walking down a flight of stairs saying "hey ambassador". i couldn't believe it.
hovering right around richard roth is hala gorani, for her ad for 'inside the middle east'. just because of the same cheesy nonsense they advertise it with. 'passports: ready, visas: confirmed." where's the news, man? it's a parody at best.
but they've really gone over the line now. they are completely relentless in tooting their own horn on this, their 25th anniversary. it's bad enough having to see christiane amanpour saying 'this is why i'm so important' every twenty minutes. now it's cnn in general saying 'we are the most important thing to happen to the earth in the past 25 years'. it's really driving me nuts.
i only like two things about cnn. sometimes they play the daily show. and richard quest. i really love that guy. say what you will, but he's someone i trust. i'd be happy to see christiane amanpour fall in a well if richard quest was covering the story.
anyway, that's my rant. |

I'm sorry, did you mention before that you're already taken ... ?? hehe... just kidding. And yes, I agree with you whole-heartedly. CNN is dirty. |

The International Corespondents show is one of the worst. Pompass jackanapes braying about how important they are.
Good cartoon in one of the papers today. Deep Throat is trying to give information about the administration lying to get us in the Iraq war and the reporter asking about Paris Hilton. |

Providing information to keep people informed, well, that sort of makes the world better than before, wouldn't you say?
I also think she's really hot.

It's not so easy to recall after so much time has passed, but before CNN there was no network anywhere that offered news junkies a place to tune in at any time of day, 24/7. It was a radical move on Ted Turner's part, and many said it would fail miserably, but of course it didn't. Today, you can not only tune into at any particular moment you are awake, but there are becoming fewer and fewer places on the planet where you cannot do so.
Calling it "important" is arguable, but it is an acheivement worth some recognition. |

CNN International isn't all bad ... it's FAR better than CNN from the USA. I do agree there are a number of pompous blowhards on there, but what network doesn't have them? Christiane Amanpour should be launched into orbit, I concur.
I personally like International Correspondents. Again, it has it's share of navel-gazing hubris, but it's sometimes very informative and interesting.
Richard Quest is the best thing about CNN. Business Traveller is a good program. World Report sometimes has some interesting things, as does Inside Africa and Inside the Middle East.
Plus, you can't beat World Sport. |
