Did you:

Give notice, and everything turned out fine?

Give notice, and get burned?

Not give notice and just bail?

Get "let go" for some reason?

Actually this should probably be a poll.

Yep, without fail every time I gave notice. (went through three jobs my first year in Korea) I think it's some Korean cultural trait thingie where they see you as abandoning your duty, so not worthy of being paid.

Though I did get some of the monies owed to me by going to the Labour Board. (twice)

Maybe "poll" form is better? To preserve anonymity?

It was another poster (grotto, I think) who led me to write this one. He said "every single person he knew who gave notice got burned."

I didn't.

It depends on your situation. How many other teachers are there? And will they stick up for you?

I'll find out this week. Payday's the 10th and I've given notice to quit by the 18th. If I don't get at least most of my pay and a letter of release I have a meeting and show my idiot boss my serious side again. Then I don't show up for work and start calling parents with a bilingual Korean friend telling them exactly what happens at our crap hogwan. Then I reevaluate my future in Korea and consider going to Japan or China. One way or another I think my boss will be very sorry he ever hired me.

I shorted on several contracts and haven't been seriously "burned". I give proper notice without bull**** reasons and have found it's the way to go. Labour board once, successfully.

That having been said, when the latest late payer finally coughs up my last paycheck it'll be "name and shame" time on Dave's.

What about th'dude?

Last year at my absolutely last hogwan job ever I still had 5 days of holidays coming. The hogwan owner asked me if I would be willing to leave on the 22'nd of the month as they had the new teachers coming in on the 24'th and wanted time to clean the apartment.

Somewhat surprised I mentioned that there would be 2 days that wouldnt be covered by my owed vacation days. They told me not to worry...then shorted me 500,000 won and skipped town before I could confront them about it.

I went to the labour board when I came back to Korea and got my money with almost no problems.

It was funny really. I delivered a note to the school telling them that if they did not pay me the money owed I would go to the labour board. They had the peice of slime Tommy from REI in Taebaek Gangwon-do call me up at 10PM and threaten to have me deported Laughing unless I dropped my claim. I laughed at him, he threatened, begged, pleaded and called me names. I went to the labour board and got my money Very Happy

I left without notice because there was some serious crap going on within this school. Later on, a couple of teachers who had finished their contracts got burned financially before they left. Teachers that had left before me got burned as well, whether they left with notice and for good reasons, or had finished their contracts.
