It's pretty silly to get into a quarrel over the number of continents. Clearly different people figure things differently. Fine by me. That teacher in Chile was out of line. She missed a chance to broaden her students.
Oceans: Arctic, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific. That's what I was taught and I'll rip your tongue out and feed it to a dog if you disagree.
I was told by some grade school teacher that the 7 in the '7 Seas' was not meant literally. She said it came from some poem or other. |

| I was taught 7 too! And that was my immediate reaction when I saw that question. And I am not American! |

I was taught 7, but I always thought that was strange because fo the Europe/Asia thing. My personal inclination is towards 6.

America (North)
America (South)

| It's also ludicrous to think of "Oceania" as a continent. The continent is Australia. All those Pacific islands are by definition not part of any continent. |
I've been wondering about this lately, also, as I keep seeing Australia lumped together with Asia. Suddenly it has started to seem that Australia is now just an island in the far south of Asia. |

New Zealand doesn't belong to any continent... we are our own little perfect corner of the world and refuse to be pigeon-holed (except as God's zone).
We are extremely couth and would lose our collectivle gruntle if we were to be lumped in with those boorish neighbours of ours. |

No they're not. Europe and Asia are separated by the Urinals.
Asia
Africa
Europe
North America
South America
Australia (So it's filled up by ONE country. Deal with it!)
Antarctica
That's seven.

They're separated by giant toilets? Hmm. |

So you cross a mountain range and your automatically in a different continent, is that how it works?
Then isn't it true, Mr. Cheswyck, that India is its own continent?
And isn't it also true, Mr. Cheswyck, that Spain is a continent?
Italy is a continent, is it not?
Indeed, isn't it a fact Mr. Cheswyck, that Chile is a continent???
I once lived in Alturas, CA for a six-moth stretch. One day I rode my bike over the Warner Mountains and into Cedarville. Had I arrived in a new continent?
I personally care not and am more than willing to consider Europe a continent so long as the arbitrary nature of this paradigm is exposed to all. |

I'm sorry. I mispelled that. I meant to say they're separated by Uranus.
Yes. Europe and Asia are separated by Uranus.
I stand corrected.
Carry on. |

To the ancients, "seven" often meant "many," and before the fifteenth century, the many seas of the world were:
the Red Sea
the Mediterranean Sea
the Persian Gulf
the Black Sea
the Adriatic Sea
the Caspian Sea
the Indian Ocean
Today, the world ocean is generally divided into four main oceans:
the Arctic Ocean
the Atlantic Ocean
the Indian Ocean
the Pacific Ocean
In addition, there are numerous smaller seas and gulfs.

I've had this 'discussion' before, too, with all the same explanations. No wonder there will never be world peace; we can't even decide on the number of continents.
If you want another argument, tell your Korean students the tomato is a fruit. I lost a friend over this one. |
