Maybe you've seen this before, but it's a pretty funny column about soccer:

I prefer to categorize soccer not as a sport but an activity involving sports equiptment. Like Jazzersize or Butts Up. I say that because two years ago I witnessed a soccer game between North and South Korea, two nations that are not only intense rivals but, technically speaking, still at war. This, I thought beforehand, would be pretty good.
That, I thought afterwards, really sucked. |

Soccer sucks and thats the end of it. I hate soccer, I hate soccer fan, I hate soccer player. Call it fooseball, call it football, call it soccer, call it unprotected sex, if it involves kicking a ball back and forth with no real objective its not fun. Im an American. |
He really didn't need to add that bit at the end. |

My favorite part about soccer is the feigning of injuries. Ghey with a capital "G". |

Isn't this called projection? The world gets in a snit because they all play football and the Americans don't care. Until a few years ago the TV networks and the sports pages didn't even mention the World Cup. I didn't even know there was a World Cup until I was in my late 30's. |

Doesn't that indicate how insular Americans can be about some things?
When you live on Planet America only three sports seem to matter.
And no. The rest of the world doesn't care if Americans dig soccer or not. Even suggesting that is the height of self-centeredness if you ask me. |

No.
People get in a snit when self-proclaimed football apathetics troll around calling a game the rest of the world loves "boring".
Morons. |

Which fully explains why the World Cup was held in a country that doesn't watch it. |

So why then?
Was it a matter of dollars or sporting interest? Most followers of football have given up on the US taking on football in a serious way. It has went up and down in the States about 4 times since the early 70's.
FIFA's policy is to hold the World Cup in each continent in rotation(sorry Australia. FIFA don't see you as a continent).
On your behalf, everyone knows that no one can organise a sporting event like America. FIFA knew that hosting the World Cup in the US would guarantee a smooth, slick show. Which is what happened.
Yes. FIFA would like the USA to get serious about football for dollar reasons. They w | |
