Anyone catch South Korea's match?

Missed it but I guess they're through to Germany along with Japan and Iran.

Ukraine beat Greece 1-0. Looks like Greece will not advance. One hit wonders?

Japan, Iran, South Korea and Saudi Arabia will join hosts Germany at next year's World Cup after securing qualification from the Asia section.
Japan beat North Korea 2-0 thanks to Atsushi Yanagisawa and Masashi Oguro, while Iran defeated Bahrain 1-0 with a goal from Mohammad Nosrati.

South Korea reached their sixth straight World Cup with a crushing 4-0 victory in Kuwait.

Saudi Arabia qualified by beating Uzbekistan 3-0 in Riyadh.

SK in. NK out.

Look forward to mass hysteria up until South Korea's early exit from Germany 2006. Then look forward to mass amnesia about anything called World Cup.

Eamo, I think you're forgetting the glory of 2002. We kicked <synonym for donkey>. Just think what we can achieve when we've had another four years of kimchi and face-whitening cream.

I am INVINCIBLE, as Boris said in GoldenEye.

BTW, here's a pic of ME at WC 2002. Just before I had the perm done and my bleach-drinking habit spiralled out of control.

LIARS!! That's ME.

I may be a haggard old ajumma who stinks of booze, sweat (often not my own) and spicy ramyeon, but I was young and hot once. I blame all those foreigners, everything was perfect until they showed up and started using my urinals.

Off topic slightly but I have a strange feeling England and Korea are going to meet at some stage in next year's WC, I can feel it in my water!

The Asian qualifying section is Mickey Mouse. I find it astonishing that the top two teams progress, and the third placed teams even have a further chance of progression. If any of those Asian teams were put in a European/South American (or some of the African ones for that matter) group they would not qualify. Of course Asia must have representation at the WC but only the top two should progress. The two runners up should be entered into a trans-continental home and away play-off tournament. The next WC is business as usual. Expect these teams to sink in the first round. Lightweight. Would Korea qualify from groups like this? I have given them odds,

(only top finisher qualifies) I would say 25-1 are fair odds

Côte d'Ivoire
Cameroon
Egypt
Libya
Benin
Sudan

Or,

(only top finisher qualifies. Runner-Up must go to play-off)

45-1

Netherlands
Czech Republic
Romania
Finland
Macedonia FYR
Armenia
Andorra

Or from here,

(Top four through, 5th place in play-off) 15-1

Argentina
Brazil
Paraguay
Colombia
Chile
Uruguay
Peru
Venezuela
Bolivia

Asia's quota needs to be trimmed.

Do you really think the first group is so strong? I mean Cameroon fine, but I haven't heard much about any of those other nations.
The European group you name is the ever-present "Group of death", I seriously doubt wheather Korea could qualify from that one too, but I bet you could pick another one from the same region and they'd have a much better chance.

The south-american group, yep- I think those nations have the hardest time of all getting through, and throwing Korea in there might be embarassing to the Reds.

Here's the breakdown:

EUROPE

Number of finalists: 13 plus hosts Germany.

AFRICA

Number of finalists: Five.

ASIA

Number of finalists: Four plus one into playoff.

CONCACAF

Number of finalists: Three plus one into playoff.

OCEANIA

Number of finalists: One into playoff.

SOUTH AMERICA

Number of finalists: Four plus one into playoff.

If I was forced to tinker I'd proably be taking places from Europe and giving them to South America before I started messing with the Asian quota, some of those middle-eastern teams are rising rapidly.

Remember, only one team qualifies from that group, and currently Ivory Coast are leading it. Egypt are a decent outfit, and Korea would struggle to get a result against them in Cairo.

I admit that the group I used as an example is possibly the strongest in Europe, but there isn't a group in Europe from which I think Korea could qualify, much less any of the other Asian teams.

I think the SA qualifying section is just about right. Let's not forget that besides the big two, South American teams haven't really made a great impact at the WC finals since the 80's.

I strongly disagree with you here. Europe has boasted countless WC semi-finalists in the last 20 years.

1986 - France, Belguim, Germany. 3/4
1990 - England, Germany, Italy. 3/4
1994 - Italy, Sweden, Bulgaria. 3/4
1998 - France, Croatia, Holland. 3/4
2002 - Turkey, Germany. 2/4

Total - Out of the last 20 semi-finalists 15 have been European. (9 different teams)

Not only does Europe boast a varying selection of semi-finalists, but it boasts the vast majority of them too. With respect, the statistical evidence strongly contradicts your position.

Yep, that is true. Earlier this year there was a friendly between the
two (a full FIFA international) which Egypt won (in Korea!).

04/02/2005 South Korea 0 - 1 Egypt

As for Ivory Coast they have Didier Drogba, of Chelsea fame.

Group 2 is tough, Korea would finish 5th in it:
1.Ukraine, 2.Turkey, 3.Greece, 4.Denmark, 5.Albania
6.Georgia, 7.Kazakhstan

Group 3 is not as bad but Korea would find it hard to finish above
3rd.
1.Portugal, 2.Slovakia, 3.Russia, 4.Latvia, 5.Estonia, 6.Liechtenstein,
7.Luxembourg

Group 4 is tough. France are fourth, all I need to say.
1.Ireland, 2.Switzerland, 3.Israel, 4.France, 5.Cyprus
6.Faroe Islands

Group 5 - Korea would have an outside shot in this one.
They could finish anywhere between 2nd and 5th and I would
not be surprised.
1.Italy, 2.Norway, 3.Slovenia, 4.Belarus, 5.Scotland, 6.Moldova

Group 6 - This is another group where they would have an outside
chance. However, Poland have been very consistent and England are
simply much better. I could see Korea lose points to all six teams here
but also beat Poland or Austria at home. Although this is a much stronger
Poland team than the one they faced in the 2002 WC.
1.Poland, 2.England, 3.Austria, 4.N. Ireland, 5.Wales
6.Azerbaijan

Group 7 - No chance. 6th. Bosnia are a decent side.
1.Spain, 2.Serbia-Mont.,3.Lithuania, 4.Belgium
5.Bosnia-Herz. 6.San Marino

Group 8 - Bulgaria was in Seoul a year or so ago and won.
No chance.
1.Croatia, 2.Sweden, 3.Hungary, 4.Bulgaria
5.Iceland, 6.Malta

2002 - Turkey, Germany. 2/4

1982 - Italy, Germany, Poland, France 4/4 Smile
