#3 Japanese () - ja - 122549 articles
#28 Korean (ѱ) - ko - 10163 articles

Japan has slightly over twice the population, slightly less internet penetration (Japan has 53% internet penetration vs. 63% over here), but twelve times the articles. What's the reason?

More international interest in all things Japanese... so that begs the next question: why. God, I don't want to get into that one.

But the Japanese wikipedia (except for a few exceptions) is written all by Japanese people, so that wouldn't explain it.

That's right, it's written all in Japanese, so I would guess that 99% of it is written by the Japanese themselves. The largest Japanese-speaking group besides the Japanese themselves are those that grew up under occupation, and they don't use computers all that much. The next largest would be Koreans and Chinese who know it fluently.

If you don't believe me, look at the IP numbers on the recent changes page:
