no no no... if by 'offensive' you mean that it has the capacity for offending as many people, i think you're wrong. it's all about connotation. the same way that the 'c' word is more offensive than the 'f' word is more offensive than the 's' word is more offensive than 'ass', which i think i can even get away with saying on here. why? i don't know.
even you wrote the word 'wiggers' but the 'n' word you wrote as 'n______'.

tell me honestly, if someone approaches you and says "what it is, G?", do you think to yourself 'i'm about to have a conversation i'll cherish till my golden years.'?
there may not be an easy definition of what proper english is, but there are a lot of easy definitions of what it isn't.
if i talked to a korean and said 'yeogi yo! han makju byong juseyo!' could i pass it off as a cultural difference? representin ma peeps? no. it's wrong. |

Euro-Wiggers
One curious fact about Europeans is that they tend to classify Americans into one of three categories: obese, cowboy, or gangsta. These two euro-wiggaz for instance, were so thrilled to meet a true to life American gangsta that they paid him five euros to pose in this picture with him in hopes of enhancing their street cred in the mean streets of downtown Copenhagen. When they asked this unsuspecting American tourist if he was a crip, he gave them a blank stare and responded that he was a Financial Planner for a fortune 500 company. The two euro-wiggaz then asked if they could be initiated into his gang. Somewhat confused, he responded that he did not know if they were hiring, but gave them his email address and invited them to send a resume.
These two Italian wiggers are living proof of the latent dangers in watching too many Roberto Bernigni films.
These young wiggers are caught posing for the camera minutes before reclaiming the local bistro as their turf. After successfully defending their hood, they celebrated by sipping coffee and snacking on madeleines. |

I don't want to sound like I'm trying to pick on you at all when I say this. I work with guys who are extremely intelligent (Programmers, sys admins, server admins, SQL, you name it) that use that kind of language on a daily basis. They're white, black, hispanic and asian. Most of them are in their late 20's and early 30's. It's more common that you might think. Granted, they aren't doctors or attorneys, or even English teachers...but they're very intelligent and they use that language. |

But isn't the point that they are educated and can speak in various ways depending on the social situation as needed? A child who can only speak Ebonics is essentially barred from a great many job opportunities, just like other non-native speakers with limited English. It's the responsibility of language teachers to help students master the language skills necessary for employment as well as access to literature, news and other parts of life. Consider Ebonics substandard or a dialect or whatever else you wish. Educate the kid to be bilingual. It's for the child's benefit. |

I remember watching some show on TV and Steve Harvey said that most African Americans had to be bilingual. There was the language of the street and then the language they used during a job interview. I still don't understand why bad english is supposed to be "cooler."
Then again, I'm not really a minority. Maybe it's something to distinguish themselves or maybe it's meant to be a middle finger to the Man. I know that when I was going to university in the States, I defiantly kept my u's and even switched my z's to s's no matter what my profs had to say. I'm such a rebel. I had one sociology prof who pointed out every single word that I wrote with the British spelling. But I digress. |

I didn't realize that was limited to minorites. In my part of Canada, people generally have strong accents and a vocabulary full of words and phrases that are far from standard English- not rude, just very different ( yeah, yeah, bring on the Newfie jokes!) but you'd almost never hear them in a university or office setting. It's not seen as cooler, and certainly doen't give any kind of street cred. It's just that non standard English is seen as unprofessional in most settings. |
