Me: What countries in Asia have you visited?
She: Singapore, Malaysia, oh and Thailand... that's the first place I saw The Gay.
Me: ha ha
She: What?
Me: You never saw gay people in Korea?
She: No. [wide-eyed] Have you???

=====================

I had a good one before:

She: I really want a boyfriend.
Me: Well, I'm available... let's go out again.
She: But you are foreigner!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Another:

She: You are nice but I want someone who loves God.

I seriously considered telling her *I* was gay. Lord knows she'd probably have snapped my photo with her phone and taken it to the media. I can imagine the headline now... "Some Foreigners Gay. Yes, GAY! Korea Must Protect its Sons"

i'm new to this place, but some posters not that long ago claimed that there's a big 'don't ask, don't tell' philosophy in korea. ie, korean men (no mention of women) can do whatever they like, provided it's behind tinted windows and not revealed to their wives or the general public (and i'm here referring to homosexuality). but then again there's a healthy culture of speculation as to what goes on in a korean's private sphere on this board.

From what I've seen, Koreans don't want to believe that The Gay exists in their country.

I think that is the generally accepted view, isn't it? To her credit, she eventually seemed to get tired of it and realized she'd achieved fame enough to do without T.C.

It's kind of weird.

Westerners...particularly North Americans...maybe even go further...and say Americans have a pretty screwed up idea of sexuality and because of the enormous influence they have over media, they expect the world to have the same concepts.

The need to categorize people leads to the problem.
Many countries have no homosexuals. Why? Because people's sexuality doesn't need to be defined that way. Why is it important?

I had to go back to the beginning and see how this thread became one about homosexuality (in Korea). I think we should be able to rename posts after they take on their true flavor.

I have some Korean gay friends. I feel sorry for them, because most of them seem resigned to getting married and "faking" a normal life. That would be hell. Perhaps I should point out they are near my age (in their 30s), so they aren't just club hopping young people who are still saying they'll refuse to buckle under to expectations.
