At my girls' middle school, I have the class captain do the greeting at the start of class - "Attention - Bow" then everyone says "Good morning, Ms Ekuboko."
Some teachers have explained to me that nowadays most Koreans don't like this military-style 'greeting' because it is a reminder of the Japanese occupation, and we all know how Koreans feel about that.
I never considered that when I got my students doing this. I observed one of the English teachers doing it and thought it was a good idea - it gets the students' attention and it is a signal for them that our class time together has begun - so stop talking, fiddling with phones, etc.
The girls don't seem to mind the bowing and greeting, and I think it takes the pressure off me to get everyone paying attention at the start of class.
Actually, if they get too rowdy during class, I can call out "Attention!" and they'll usually calm down. (Or some smarty pants will call back "Bow" ) |

| As for bowing, at my high school only the old timers make their students do that. The younger Korean teachers are much more relaxed (to a point). |
I'll say! At our hagwon the K-teachers let the kids ddongchim them, climb on them, smack their asses....it's a regular circus. |

I have a little dog that I took in late last year. She was just a pup of a few weeks then, but my how she's grown. Strong, too, and can she ever JUMP HIGH!! I mean freaky high!!!! You should see her. It's when I have a ball or squeaky toy in my hand and she wants me to hurry up and throw it so she can play 'go fetch'.
Anyway, so amazingly high can she jump, and repeatedly too -- like she's got springs in her legs -- I was thinking about a career for her in the circus. Could you PM details about yours? You say it's a regular one, so can she expect regular circus-dog pay and conditions? |
