Monday the Senate will try one more time to confirm Bolton's nomination. The Democrats have asked for more information; the Republicans are saying it is time to vote (so no more information).
I predicted last April that the confirmation would be withdrawn by May 1. Well, I was wrong. However, it's now mid June and he hasn't been confirmed.
Do you think he will be confirmed tomorrow?
Do you think he will be rejected?
Do you think Bush will wait for the Congressional summer vacation and just appoint Bolton without confirmation?
(I tried to make a poll but it isn't working for me today.) |

To UN Ambassador from Boboland, NYC:
The UN has been going along for 60 years the way it is. Bush has 3 1/2 more years, then he's out. Your orders are to oppose any and all changes and/or reforms, no matter how desirable, until further notice. Don't expect any further instructions until 2009.
Thank you and have a nice day,
Head of State of Boboland |

He's in?
It's only 7:30 in the morning in Washington. The Senators are still in bed with their honeys down at the love motel. How could they have voted already? |

Yes. The real question was what do the American people deserve? |

It's 5:25pm in Washington. C-Span 2 is showing the Senate debate live. (I'm still puzzled by funplanet's assertion that Bolton is 'in'.) |

The Senate again failed to invoke cloture. Bolton is still on hold. |

I don't support Bush and I disapprove of Bolton.
But this choice has little to do with democracy. It's about presidential prerogatives. The president won the election, that's his mandate. It's his privilege to appoint who he wants to serve his gov't at his pleasure.
The Senate must approve this, but barring major issues (not just because the dude is a jerk and an ideologue), this is how it should be. |
The Senate is supposed to 'advise and consent'. If they are prevented from consenting, their role becomes meaningless and democracy is eroded. They are supposed to excersize independent judgement and the president is bound by that judgement- bypassing the senate is antidemocratic. |
