Hey what do I need to get a driver's license here? I do have a current one from USA. I heard that there's an equivalent of a DMV in Gangnam. Where is that? Or is there a place where I can do it in Bucheon? Thanks

At the DMV, you need to have your eyes tested and present a completed application form, 30,000won, and your American driver's license. Sorry, but I'm not sure where the branches are in Seoul. They'll keep your American license.

Bad information. If they kept your license, you need to go back and get it.

There should be a place in Bucheon. Ask Korean coworkers if they can check for you. License is (Myunho) in Korean if people don't understand what you mean.

The requirements for an American to Korean license are that you take an eye test, colorblindness test, and get your hands checked for deformities (they look at them for 1 second, put simply). I don't remember the exact fees involved, but it shouldn't be more than 30,000 won.

You also have to take a written test. The licensing center will give you information on that. It's 20 questions and you need to get 12 correct to pass. The questions are somewhat tricky, but I walked in and took it without studying and passed.

If they talk about keeping your American license, then you need to ask them to double-check the rules with managers, as that is not the case.

Maybe rules have changed since I got mine, but I have both my Korean and American license. No one asked for it.

They kept my UK licence, but that was back in 99. The theory is that it is an "exchange". The rules may have changed: it matters little, geting a replacement UK licence is easy enough and has to be done on change of address anyway.

They do not keep your license. (or they shouldn't)

I'm Canadian, and when I changed over Canadians did not have to write the test. Things may have changed. That was 2 years ago.

I still have my novice drivers liscence, from British Columbia. Never bothered to go the distance and take that 2nd road test to get rid of the green 'N' sticker.

I'm wondering if they'll notice/care? It doesn't look muc different than the normal liscence, just a slightly different color scheme.

if you have a canadian license you don't have to take the written exam. if you have an american license you do. this is the reciprocation rule that seems to guide most of koreas policies in regards to international issues. koreans can drive in canada with a korean license, but not in america (so they say). i'm not sure if this necessarily true, considering that each province/state has there own laws.

maybe they changed it in the last 10 months or so....but my friend and i both had valid US driver licenses, went to the gangnam DMV (near COEX), filled out some paperwork and got some stamps, added our picture, took a color blind test, and we got our Korean driver's license. it's valid for 9 years (about 7 years longer than my visa) Confused

anyways, i did not have to take a written exam or road exam.
