I was startled by the argument made earlier on this thread that globalization has reduced people's need to understand geography. I think just the opposite.

I think you were startled because you thought it was an argument. I simply asked you to consider a point of view if you go and reread the post. Your paraphrase does not actually do its job. I agree with you in fact that globalisation means we need to understand geography more but at the same time, one by-product of the globalisation of culture is that knowledge of geography becomes pointless.

I'm not sure anyone on this thread has yet argued for the necessity of a deeper understanding of geography. Personally, I wouldn't argue for geography. If I was going to argue, I'd do so for ethnography/ethnology because I think it aims for understanding by default. I feel slightly worried if anyone suggests that simply knowing the capital of Italy is Rome gives us somehow better "understanding"

Well yes you're right. But how far do the Urals extend south? Certainly gets a bit difficult when you hit the Black Sea so a bit of grace would season your answer a bit. That's why Turkey was referred to as Asia Minor though now it is set on attempting to join the EU... not the AU.

Bit of grace? Sorry if I sounded hostile, I don't know how far the Urals extend... hence the "I think" part of my post.

Urals are mountains? I thought that was a bathroom fixture.
