My Norton subscription has expired and I don't want to renew. A friend of mine insists that Kapersky is, bar none, the best there is. Is there any truth to this? What do you think is the best? If he is right then I plan on downloading it from the internet (after I purchase it of course). Also (this is probably a stupid question) would I have to uninstall Norton before I install whichever new one I get?

Thanks folks!

For pure virus protection, it is the best. However, it doesn't do other things like check email attachments or detect spyware. So it's good, but you should use it along with some other software.

For an excellent FREE virus program use AVAST Home Edition!

www.avast.com

I've used it for several months on computers at home and work, and it is fabulous. It doesn't slow down your computer like Norton does, either. You can set it to run in the background and leave you alone, which I love. no more center-screen pop-ups like my old virus checker had... gosh, those drove me nuts!

It has a resident checker, rates highly on tests, and is a great thing. It does detect e-mail, and I also run Zonealarm and Microsoft's anti-spyware at the same time with no problems.

Heck, it's free!

And I'll second AVG. I've used it on one computer for a couple of years and when my Norton expired I swtiched all my PCs to AVG and have been extremely satisifed with the performance.

I'm normally a fan of Free Version AVG but, recently, I noticed it can't automatically update from the server.

You can tell because your little icon in the taskbar goes monochrome.

I think you can do it manually from the website (I never had to because it was able to update itself 1 or 2 days later).

Just a little flaw in an otherwise nice AV.

eamo....I had the same problem, but only once. It would connect, tell me there is an update, but it couldn't seem to download it. 10 minutes later, all was well. Question

So uh, what error message do you get if you try update in the evening?
My AVG updates the same way Norton did- it lets me know when there are up
