RIP Gargamel
Paul Winchell the voice of Gargamel, and Tigger, passed away last Friday.
Quote: |
Winchell provided the pipes for dozens of other 'toons, including Spider-Man in the 1980s TV version, the Hanna-Barbera heavy Dick Dastardly and Smurf nemesis Gargamel. He died in his sleep early Friday at his home in Moorpark, California, according to a Website operated by his daughter, actress April Winchell. He was 82.

?!? Gargamel was Tigger? Tigger was Gargamel?!? The world shifts on its axis and I feel dizzy...
Uh, seriously though- I saw a few newscasts reporting his death and every one mentioned that he was the voice of Tigger. That's it. They didn't mention anything else. You would have figured that "and Gargamel from the Smurfs" would have been worth the 3/4 of a second it would take to utter those words... |

Thus illustrating the difference between English teachers and everyone else. The Smurfs were French, nothing decent ever happened there. Tigger, well, he was British but he now comes in a box from Disney. That's American. That's good. Clear? |

Tiggers bounce. Gargamel Don't.
I'd say Tiggers are also a common household toy years after his debut.
Gargamel is mostly remembered by us somewhat older folks when we get nostalgic. |

He smurfed the bucket? Went to the great smurf in the sky? Is now smurfin' up daises? Smurfed off the mortal coil? Gave up the smurf? Smurfed the plank, and is now smurfin' wit' da' fishes? Is sowing the Elysian smurfs? Bought the smurfin' farm? Cashed in his smurfs? Smurfed in to the maggot motel? |

Why did Gargamel want to trap the Smurfs? Was he going to eat them or make them work for him? What was the motive again?

I vaguely remember something about them being a vital ingredient in a potion Gargamel wanted to make. Could be wrong. I was 12 years old and had a crush on Smurfette. |

My favourite Smurf episode was the one where Gargamel actually did manage to catch the Smurfs, but let them all go because he realised that without the Smurfs his life had no meaning. |
