The flags from your contries look really similar.
Do you ever wish they were more different?

we know the difference in our flags, we very much have a love hate relationship, but its ony on the sporting feilds that this occurs.
Im one of the minority who thinks that when it comes down to it, we are very much similar people.
I live in Australia, but I was born and bred in Kiwiland, Both coutries are without a doubt the best places on this planet to live, because of the way we choose to live our lifes, the term laid back was invented by us, and we wouldnt have it any other way.
We both have natives in our countries that want our flags changed, but that will never happen. |

If you didn't tell us I wouldn't know which was NZ and which was Oz.
There's always some confusion over the Irish and Italian flags too.

When you guys see your flag (kiwis and aussies) do you think about Britain at all, having their flag on there, too? I mean, is that cool with you guys? Is it your laid back qualities that enable you to have another nation's flag stamped onto yours? Just how strong is this commonwealth relationship? I mean, are things cool or what? I'm seriously quite ignorant on this subject. |

No. I'm from NZ but I lived in Oz for nearly 20 years (I had no choice - my family forced me to move with them when I was 9 years old), but I moved back after I finished working at my old job (with 6 weeks holiday every year - sigh). I do wish that the cognitively impaired were able to distinguish the difference between the two flags though. They are quite different and easy to tell apart. |

I think both are splendid, splendid.
Especially that perfect design in the top left corners, so symbolic of Union.
What else could they have? A sheep on the Kiwi flag and a load of balls on the Oz? |

Derrek, you must be as bored as I am. There's a proposal for a new Kiwi flag:

only slightly less gay than this:

That is horrid. I remember seeing some black and white flag being proposed (no not the Allblacks flag).. that looked ten times better.. although I'm not sure a country would want to have a black and white national flag.... |

Does anyone know if the Aussie flag at the Ulsan Outback still has the stars upside down? |

the commonwealth tie was very strong through both world wars, but Britain were going to let Australia and NZ go to the Japanese because they couldn't support us in that part of the war the way we were supporting them in Europe, so afer the war and when our economies were less reliant on the Brits we started to realise that it wasnt a big thing for us anymore to be part of the commonwealth.
The reason we keep the union jack on our flag is because we are proud of our short history, and the U.K is part of that history, would you change your flag? |

They'd both look nicer without the stars. |

Nope, doesn't bother me because they're not actually that similar. They each have a different number of stars, which are also shaped and coloured differently. Not too difficult to distinguish between the two.
Of course every now and again someone wants to start a referendum to the government about changing the NZ flag, usually to get rid of the Union Jack in the corner. But can you imagine the politically correct bollocks they'd want to include in a new flag so that everyone is happy? Probably have raised dots on one side just so blind (oops - visually impaired) people can feel 'empowered' or some such nonsense. |

Sorry, but to someone who has never seen them before, and would only see them occasionally, they look darned near the same.
Unless you see them side-by-side.
When people not from your country see one of your flags at a time (which is normally the case) most have no clue: 1. What country it is 2. Or be able to choose between NZ or Aussie.
Just the sad truth.
And yes, the Ireland/Italy flag situation is difficult too. |
