|

I was sitting down with an old friend, who is married, and we were talking about the new rules governing teaching and we came up with an interesting question;
If they need sealed transcripts to get an E-2, what about those people with an F-2 visa?
Do they have to go through the same hurdles as us single people?
I think this would make an interesting topic because I think it would descriminate against single and married people in Korea. |

It is already discriminated.
With a F-2 visa, in theory and in practice you don't need an E-2 visa. People on this board have argued with me on this on numerous occasions and they will tell you they still have to get an E-2 etc.... but i am sure that if you had only asked, their local immi would have told them that they could, indeed, only apply for permission to engage in activities not covered by sojourn. The difference between this and an E-2 visa is the sponsorship. Permission to engage blah blah is sponsored by your spouse.. whereas an E-2 is sponsored by the employer. If you ask me, I would choose a work permit over a work visa any day.
So... I guess to answer your question.. it depends on who is sponsoring you. With a work permit, you don't need to show them that much evidence that you can teach.. just qualifications and marriage certificate (or your spouse's hojock) and your passport to show that you are a native speaker... they never asked for my transcripts, sealed or otherwise last year when I applied for a permit to help out a friend. In fact.. they didn't ask that many questions.. the only thing they needed was a release letter from my husband saying that he could spare me during those hours, as I was still one of his employees.
I suspect that if you are applying for an E-2, it doesn't matter whether you have a F-2 or not, you still have to do it the way they've said it should.. ? |

I got my E2 (added to my F2) at the end of April.
I was not asked for transcripts.
Within a week after that though my school asked me for them as they had heard that immigration wanted them for all new teachers.
Since I already had the Visa I didn't see the need in going through the hastle.
Not sure if that helps much. |

thanks....every little bit helps him.
The problem is the rules of the game changed drastically as of May 16th and I don't know if the rules changed for him too.
And I also think the segment about the disenfranchised (sp?) whose English teaching hubby ran around didn't help much. |

Tzechuck, why do you think onewaytraffic ended up with an E2 visa added on to his F2. I'm sure he was eager to get a permission to work visa but if you are going to teach in Korea you really should have an E2 added to your F2. |

Interesting point there Tzechuck. I will try in a years time just to get a 'permit' as opposed to an additional E2 visa.
As far as needing transcripts. I picked up my E2 (I have an existing F2) last friday and needed sealed transcripts to complete the process. |

I went 3 weeks ago (or so) after this whole sealed envelopes mess had started and didn't need a sealed envelope or any transcripts for that matter. Mind you, I was renewing my existing e2, so that may be the difference. |

I was asked by SNU for transcripts, even though I had an F-2 Visa. When quried about it, they said all applicants must send them. Maybe they didn't see that I had an F-2 Visa, but it seems pretty picky to do it before the interview even, but SNU can do it b/c of their reputation. |

This doesn't sound anything like the regular teaching for which we need an e2 - which most on this board are talking about. I think you're talking about something different, which might explain some of the arguments. |

I was just thinking of this thread because today, as I was leaving the Cheongju bus terminal this afternoon, this immigration officer came up to me and demanded to see my passport and ARC. Yes, immigration are lurking at bus terminals now!! When he saw that I had an F-2 visa, he said, "you English teacher?" I told him no...I'm not working, and he looked really suspicious and said "in future, you need E-2 to work, OK?" I was confused but really didn't want to discuss visa issues with an immigration officer at the bus terminal....he was pleasant enough and just let me go....that's all I wanted. |
