actually thorin that design is old. This one

is the current one.

I'm kiwi and don't really care more important things to worry about than a bloody flag.. I know the difference and it makes for a great general knowledge question.

Here's my entry for the new New Zealand flag:

Kia kaha Te Tū Wehe Kaioha o Aotearoa!/Long live the Socialist Republic of New Zealand!

I wonder just how many of us could look at a page with let's say 50 well known flags on it..and I wonder which ones would be the most recognized right off the bat.
I think the Japanese, Canadian, the U.S. and a few other are among the most recognized around. Yes? No?

I can't speak for the Kiwis but there are many Australians who would like to see the British flag removed from our Australian flag.

If you know any thing about Australia's history you will know that Britain used Australia and its people. 200 years ago, Britain's prisons were full with mostly minor criminals so the Brits used Australia as a dumping ground for their surplus prisoners.

Another example :During the second world war, when Australia was under threat of invasion by the Japanese, our government called some of our troops home to defend Australia. The British government tried to divert the troop transports to Borneo because it suited them. Fortunately our government told the Brits to get @#$%&*'ed.

Later, the Brits conned our government into allowing them to test nuclear weapons in the Australian desert.

Individual Brits are OK but their government has a lot to answer for.

And some poeple wonder why we want a flag of our own.

Unless you see them side-by-side.

When people not from your country see one of your flags at a time (which is normally the case) most have no clue: 1. What country it is 2. Or be able to choose between NZ or Aussie.

Just the sad truth.

As I said, the cognitively impaired...

I am a Kiwi and I would definately like to see our flag changed. I have been brought up with it all my life, yet still have to take a step back and think whether it is our flag or the Australian flag when I am presented with it. I would like our flag to look uniquely our own, and quite like the black/silver fern version posted previously.

speaking of which I remember a funny story in the news a few months back about tame iti (maori protester) who got charged for shooting a flag.

Turned out the flag was an aussie one.

hehehehe

The Great Southern Cross, numbnuts.

I'm pretty laid back - but I wouldn't put pedophile jokes in the same category.

I don't mind the current version. The symbolism of the Southern Cross and the blue background representing the Pacific Ocean is pretty cool. I'm ambivalent to the Union Jack, and the flag's similarity to the Australian one.

I don't really like the idea of having a predominantly black flag (too dark) with a stylized silver fern (on this design it looks white anyway) -- hmm, maybe we could bail out Air NZ again and buy its koru logo from them to make a new and better design..?!

I wonder if Liberia and Malaysia wished their flags were different too.

I'll let you figure out which one is Malaysia's flag.

Canada original semi official flag before the Maple Leaf, the good ol' Red Ensign... which can be seen on the old $5/$10 blls which made a lot of stupid Canadians think there was an American flag on Canadian bills.
