Hi guys,

I have 3 3rd grade middle schoolers who come and say hello to me everyday. I never got to teach them as I only teach 1st and 2nd years but today they were saying how could they improve their English and I thought it'd be nice to buy them some simple books which they could read and enjoy.

What books are going to interest 15year old girls but aren't so hard they give up? I thought about giving them HP 6 when I finish it but a. it would only go to one person and b. it would be a HUGE task for them.

Any suggestions?

Sorry if this has been asked before the search page was borked on this computer.

Chris

You might check Children's Lit on the internet and look at prize winners/nominees. There will be information on reading levels.

I was looking for something else today but came across a site that might be useful to you.

www.webenglishteacher.com

It has a section with literature, including children's literature--with e-texts. Bunches of authors. Check it out.

Cambridge English Readers are excellent. They have a number on the back saying what level they are. Very interesting stories. Hard to say for girls. Some guys I know love Sherlock Holmes, Edgar Allen Poe, etc. Maybe girls would enjoy Agatha Christie?! How about the Tao of Pooh?

COMIC BOOKS

They are a good way to work through a language, the pictures help you figure out the dialogue (decreasing your need for a dictionary) and it also tends to be closer to spoken form than written form.

Here in Korea it is easy to find quite a few Manga series that are translated. Which is something a lot of kids that age are into.

Oxford has a really great series too. There are 6 levels so your students can find a level that suits them and there are a lot of popular and classic stories. They're pretty easy to find.
