In St. Johns it was an excuse to stay out and drink all night then crawl up Signal Hill at 5 am for the sunrise ceremony. I learned that there's nothing funnier than Morris dancers when you're drunk.

I had a feeling this thread would get a couple of hits.

I agree with the poster who tied it into a sports comparison. You cheer for (for example) the Dallas Cowboys. How many of them are actually form dallas? from Texas? What does their winning have to do with you? If they win a major even then you might just benifit because of some extra business in the area but for the most part it is simply akin to an opiate for the masses.

So, in the OP I tired to understand why I am proud. What have I done as a Canadian and what do I really have to be proud of.

The truth is, it's not all that much it seems. I'm more proud to be who I am, than my national identity.

*oh and Grotto, put a link down for those stats k. Cuz I get this silly nationmaster telling me stuff like this.
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/geo_are_lan
1. Russia 16,995,800 sq km
2. Antarctica 14 million sq km (280,000 sq km ice-free, 13.72 million sq km ice-covered) (est.)
3. China 9,326,410 sq km
4. United States 9,158,960 sq km
5. Canada 9,093,507 sq km

Hey buddy. If you looked at Grotto's numbers you would have realized that the numbers you just posted are the same numbers that he posted minus the lakes and rivers. I don't think that saying Hudson Bay is not part of Canada is a valid argument. I also do not agree that Antarctica is a country. Therefore, Canada IS the second largest landmass! The first nation of hockey! And the best part of North America. My name is Free World, and I am Canadian!!!

OK. Finally. None of those shiitheads that play for Dallas are really from Texas. Thank you for being Canadian and making that observation. Those from Texas or New Mexico love that team. But some of us don't. Myself being from New Mexico, I can say that our New Mexico-Texas rivalry is on par with that of S.Korea and Japan.

I hope you know man, that I just picked that team at random. It had nothing to do with US/Canada relations. You've said on this tread that you're "just going long with the divide" between Canadians and Americans over here in Korea (or something to that effect).

But when I met ya, you semed like a nice enough guy and in no way rude to me becuse I'm Canadian, so, why not buck the trend? Why not just stay true to how you are?

Anyways, back on topic... hmmm yeah, do we judge water as part of a country? Just the lakes? How do we divide the great lakes? Honestly, I'd like to see a difinitive source. Very Happy

No, man I just took offense at the Texas reference. they're like the Quebec of Canada. They still consider themselves as a Federeal Republic. It has nothing to do with Canada whatsoever. In fact, I thank you all (In Canada) for giving us Doug Flutie. My spite in my comment was based solely on my hatred towards Texas. Nothing to do with Canada. I was merely making a point that those who play for Dallas aren't usually from Texas and only go there for money.

Ugh... I just lost my team a hockey game in the worst-ever final two-minute, two-goal, short-handed comeback ever to disgrace the game...

Congratu-effin'-lations, Rocky Mountain Tavern team mofos...

And happy friggin' Canada Day- but I'm bitter as hell for the rest of the weekend.

ARRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

The link is the CIA website world factbook

http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/

The area of Canada does not include Hudson Bay or Canadian waters in the oceans...just the lakes and rivers contained within the landmass....we do have 3/5 of the worlds fresh water!

Sorry to come off as unkind; but, if I take all the Canadians I know and all the Americans I know I find that the Canadians are drunks, were drunks, or will be drunken. And the Americans are fat, will be fat, or will be fattening. This is why I have decided to conquer Korea: if I can subdue the peoples and make them my serfs I can raise them up the American way without the fat lazy kid factor. So the Koreans will speak proper English - not all this "aye" tagging. Of course I'll also have to correct their inebriation dependence perhaps they are even more full blown then the beer breathing Canadians. Then I'll also have to prevent them from becoming crack smoking meta amphetamine freakizoids like too many American dope head hippie youth.

The CBC has a Canada day quiz for the occasion. I scored 16 out of 20--I forgot how long we've had that damned loonie around.

Canada Day Quiz

Looks like a lot of Canadians need to bone up on their history, though.

Canadians score 40% on national quiz

Looking forward to lots of beer and barbecuing today. Very Happy

I think Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie said it best:

Hi. My name is Joe. Uh, I'm not a hacker or a terrorist. I don't like Celine Dion or Shania Twain. I do know Jimmy, Sally or Susie from Canada, but they aren't as nice as you think.

I'm ruled by a rich white prime minister, not a rich white president. I don't speak French, but I can converse fluently in American. And I pronounce it "A Boot," not "A Big Shoe."

I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack, because even though no one realizes that we are just as guilty for the fate of the third world, everyone blames America.

When I'm at home, I realize I had better not protest deforestation or fascist dictators without risking a face full of pepper spray and a criminal record.

I believe in peacekeeping, even if it means killing Somali teenagers for fun!

I believe in turning back boatloads of Chinese immigrants, a failing healthcare system, and late night pron disguised as art. And that the beaver is a truly proud and beautiful part of a woman's body.

I believe the French should whine about everything, the English should apologize, and that it is pronounced ZED, not ZEE. ZED! ...Because that's how the Queen of England told us to pronounce it.

Canada is the second largest landmass, the second nation in hockey, and the best part of the Northern third of America.

My name is Kermo, and until we are annexed by the States, I AM CANADIAN.

I got 15/20, but that test was a little odd- why are banks such a big part of Canadian history? ( 2 questions about them, and only one about First nations, and one about the maritimes)
