More and more info has been leaking. Not a big a reach as anyone else thought. Bottom half of the lotto were all bigs. A few teams had him rated anywhere from 5-16.

CV easily has the most upside (maybe along with Bynum) outta that group.
He was the best choice if Babs had his heart set on a big.

Most of the bad press is due to

a) Babcock doesn't know how to handle the media
b) track record (callin reach and bust because of last year and not so much based on this draft).

I actually really like this stand by Babcock...

Quote:
Babcock knew picking Villanueva would be received poorly.

"When we made the choice to go with Charlie, I knew it wouldn't be a popular decision, because it's not, say, Sean May or Gerald Green," Babcock said. "(The fans) probably would have cheered (high schooler) Gerald Green because everybody has hyped him up with his athletic ability and his dunking ability and all that.

"Gerald Green could be unbelievable, a tremendous player. But right now, Charlie would just destroy him, absolutely destroy him. And Charlie is only 20."

I read that one of the reasons Green fell so far was b/c his Ring finger is an inch shorter than normal due to a childhood accident.

Surprised no one has mention Larry Hughes going to the Cavs. A great move, in my opinion. They courted Redd and Allen first, but Hughes is a better fit, in my opinion. He's a great defensive player, and he showed in Washington that he can play with other superstars (Arenas and Jamison). Allen is the kind of guy who has to be the best player on the team (and his FG% is often terrible), so he wouldn't have fit in well with Lebron; and Redd...man, I don't know. He's a good player, but he played for the Bucks. I think my grandmother could put up big numbers playing for the Bucks, and she's 4'11.

Apparently they're going to re-sign Rik Smits 2.0 (Ilgauskas) soon. They won't be unstoppable, but they're going to make the playoffs this year. I hope Mike Brown is a competent coach.

I think signing Hughes was the better move IF they can find a sharpshooter this summer. Cleveland needs somebody to convert all the open looks that James will create for them. Hughes can't do that. He doesn't have a reliable outside game. However, on the defensive side is where games in the playoffs are won.

If they could somehow get Antoine Walker to sign for the trade exeception they would be set. Though, it seems Walker is a player chasiong money and not rings.

I 100% agree they need a sharpshooter, but certainly you're not saying Antoine Walker is the answer to that need.

I know I shouldn't say this, but maybe Latrell could play that role from the bench.

They should also call up the Chicago Bulls and try to bag Tyson Chandler. But that'd probably put them over the cap, wouldn't it?

Latrell is more of a slasher and not a sharp-shooter. No way they could afford him. The man needs alot of money to feed his family.

However, the Cavs did land Donyell Marshall from the Raptors earlier today. I think think this is a great move. Marshall is a hard working player who can hit the open J off the bench, provide energy and grab some rebounds. He would have been on my list of choices, but I thought he would have wanted more than what he is getting.

Word is also out that Abdur-Raheem is going to the Nets in a sign and trade.

How about Larry Brown possibly headed to New York. Might make moot those theories of Lebron playing there in the future. No one is going to admit it, but I think Lebron had some say in the eventual collapse of the deal that would have made Brown head of b-ball operations in Cleveland.

Love the Cavs signing Ludacris, er, Marshall, by the way.

Look at this Nate Robinson put back dunk in the Minnesota Summer League. http://aol.nba.com/timberwolves/gameday/robinson_dunk.html

Shocked

As far as the cavs go, I really like their off season. It looks like they are now going after either Sarunas Jasikevicius or Marko Jaric. The addition of either of those two will make that back court sick. What Danny Ferry has done this off season should make this team a force in the East.

The Rockets have come to terms with Stromile Swift for the MLE and are now targeting Damon Stoudamire. I really like the Swift deal for the price and think Stoudamire would be a good pick up.

Maybe a guy like Brevin Knight? He is a solid stop-gap player who could be effective in the short term.

Brown to the Knicks? Good luck!!! They would be a playoff team under Brown, but that is it. They still don't have the interior defence to do much this upcoming season. Losing Houston this year and Penny next (or the one after) will give them cap flexibility to be competitive if Isiah would stop taking on these outrageous contracts.

Radical prediction: the Nets will not make the playoffs next season. There's going to be a lot of time spent on the IL between 'Reef, Jefferson, VC and Kidd. Plus their bench still sucks, and they haven't addressed their most important need, a decent center. I know, "there are no decent centers"; but even a Danny Fortson or an Adonal Foyle would make a big difference. Sorry, Gonad Krstic isn't going to wow anyone next year. He's like Darko with playing time.

Well, if they don't make the playoffs then Portland doesn't get the draft pick (from the SAR sign and trade) for at least another year. Doubt PDX keeps it anyway. Nash will probably just package it out in another trade, perhaps with Van Exel's contract.

Any thoughts on Bonzi Wells going to the Kings? I think the Kings and Jazz are getting burned in this deal. As I read it, the teams get:

Kings: Bonzi Wells

Jazz: Greg Ostertag

Grizzlies: Bobby Jackson, Curtis Borchardt, Raul Lopez, Kirk Snyder

So the Grizzlies are getting all that, just for Bonzi Well, who's coming off his worst season in years? Seems to me that Bobby Jackson would be plenty. Granted, Snyder hasn't shown anything and I suppose Utah's trying to clear bench space, but goodness that's giving up a lot of bodies for a headache like Wells.
