Many Koreans are too damned nosey at times. Tell 'em, "Curiosity killed the cat...and the Korean", while you demonstrate how to cut 'em another smile. Funny story though. Sounds like you work with, and teach, a bunch 'o pervs.
I told my Korean co-teacher the other day that the computer in my classroom has a virus. She automatically assumed I put it there. I said, "No. I'm trying to FIX the problem SOMEONE ELSE made. When I set up a computer or network, I incorporate some safety measures. When I download programs or files, I scan them for viruses/spyware/adware before installing or using or viewing them. I usually don't access crappy websites like DREAMWIZ that install browser hijackers/trojans onto your computer." Still don't think she believes me. Another time, over lunch, she said, "It's with regret that I have to say that I'm missing some money." I KNOW I didn't take anything, but how was I supposed to convince anyone of my innocence? I had just started there, sat at the desk beside hers, and had been in the office alone at times. When I was walking from the school at the end of the day, dragging my heels, she shouted out the window in a laughing way, "Oh, I found it. It was in my purse. Hee, hee. So sorry. Hee, hee. Have a nice weekend." I'm not all that paranoid, but sometimes I think some of 'em are pretty good at psychological manipulation. Either that or I'm giving their English ability more credit than it deserves... |

No, the thought hadn't occurred to me. Too late now, I guess. |

To those who admonish me not to bring controversial material to school, I'll take that as well deserved advice to correct my prior position of ignorance. You see, the thought never occurred to me that there was anything wrong the the magazine. Where I'm from (US), magazines with almost-nude women on the cover are in practically every store, by every cash register. My original purpose of bringing the magazine was for something to read while I ate dinner in the cafeteria. Of course, I changed that plan forthwith!
It's hard to get used to Korean prudishness. Lesson learned...
BTW, anyone notice how much clothes that model on the Korean Maxim cover is wearing? This is the picture that was on the cover of the Maxim I have.

nothing is safe at a hagwon. It was foolish to even bring in the magazine.
Maxim is soft porn..for guys who are too embarrassed to walk into a shop and buy real porn. |

You know, these kids have a tendency to complain a lot. They mostly complain about each other, but if you give them any pretext to complain about you, it's my experience that they will.
It's not really that they're complaining, in the sense of voicing a serious issue that they hope to resolve...it's just their way of getting through the day.
Your error was offering them a pretext.
And, still, Maxim is a long way from porn -- unless you take it in a nineteenth-century context. No penetrations, not even pseudopenetrations in that magazine. Just semi-nude, or at best, topless women. Only a puritan would be truly offended by that mag.
This is much ado about nothing. |

| You fool. You don't carry that stuff around with you. You want to LOOK LIKE someone who reads porn? Are you trying to look un-educated? Try getting your news from real sources, like the newspaper. Leave the porn at home. Gross. |

| TY for that pic of Vanessa. She was important in my life for about 4 months a long time ago. She's a doll. I saw on the soaps when I would flick through them then she was in a movie and then I think on 91020. |

| The key question to determine if this is much ado about nothing isn't whether or not the school recognises the vast gulf separating Maxim from hardcore deviant porno magazines. Because they won't. To them, it's a mere quibble. The key question is, will they decide to just drop the whole matter, or will they decide ride it into the sunset. |

Probably depends on whether they like him or not, then. Or whether any hysterical parents get involved. Nice and subjective. Typical sex scandal. Might even make the local news.
Hope he never planned on running for office in the U.S. He's now tainted goods. |
