According to Yahoo, Sandra Day O'Connor, the former Republican state Senator who (surprise!) cast the 5th and deciding vote in Bush v. Gore is retiring. All those surprised by this, please raise your hand.

Now slap yourselves.

Except for her vote in the Gore-Bush campaign issue, I do think she had integrity and was rather consistent with her judgements. Unfortunately I think she will be replaced by a more conservative, more "activist" judge. Ironic that the GOP and right-wing whines about "activist" judges but then has no problem if they are active conservative judges.

Kinda like what the liberals have been doing for the last 40 years, huh?

There hasn't been a SC appointment in 11 or 12 years and from the reports, both sides have been collecting money (one side has $20 million to spend--didn't hear about the other side) and attack ads are in the vaults waiting.

It's been interesting listening to the reporters talk about O'Connor. They say she was a centrist conservative when she was appointed in '81 but that the conservative camp shifted to her right and has been upset with her. They want an ideological conservative.

Gonzales' name is coming up a lot but some say Bush will hold him back for when Rhenquist resigns.

Predictions are the nomination will come in about 2 weeks.

Activists Judges are those who make decisions that certain groups disagree with. It is a purely political term.

I've been hearing about masses of conservatives lining up to oppose him because he's not hard-line enough about abortion. There is also the fact that he's so intimate with the current administration that he will have to recuse himself from dozens of important votes that might come up re Iraq, torture Gitmo, etc. What good would he be to Bush if he has to step outside the room on such things?
