I was always indifferent towards Guinness until I visited Dublin and had a pint there.. I couldn't stop drinking the stuff! Its all I thought about while there. Its really that good.
There was another great stout I got turned on to in Ireland as well.. forget the name.. it'll come to me later.
Will you also be going to other places in Ireland as well? |
Is the drink called Murphy's? Or Kilkenny? |
Or Beamish perhaps?
This is a good thread. Satisfied sigh....Soon I will be back in the US, and the upside of that is that I will again have ready access to real beer.
For now though, it's off to the fridge for some more Crass. |

Had an OK pint for 12000 won today in Gangnam, at the "Irish pub" there.
To be fair, the place is very well furnished, spacious and looks great: helpful and good staff. |

BEAMISH! That stuff was really good!
To Mercury.. even better than Dublin (from a tourist/travelling perspective) was GALWAY!
Particularly now in July.. must be really festive. They have tons of live music throughout all the bars.. tons of musicians in the streets playing the bagpipes and guitars or whatever else they get their hands on.. its really easy to walk around.. there is even a couple very large BarnesandNobles or Borders or whatever in the touristic section - the entire town is kind of a tourist town.
Had some great nights down in the pubs of that town - Irish music everywhere.. and the Guinness just pouring from the tabs.

13 Euros for the "brewery" (well, ex-brewery) "tour" (well, there's no tour guide) which includes one "free" pint of guinness at the horrendously crowded bar at the top. There's a great view from up there, but the whole thing was a ripoff.
I've drank guinness for years and have heard no end of people banging on about how "it doesn't travel well" "you can only get the real thing in Ireland" etc. etc.
Went to Dublin last year- it tastes just the same as in Manchester, Liverpool, London etc. |

That's perhaps the funniest thing I have read on Dave's.
GWB was only recently complaining that more and more US imports were coming from overseas. Perhaps, as he can only talk about it, he meant beer? |

I didn't really care for the Guiness Tour. Their post-modern schtick is quite tacky. I think Guiness travels relatively well. What I really love is the Jameson Irish Whiskey Tour. That is unbelievable! Don't forget to raise your hand and be a "volunteer" when they ask for ya, you won't regret it.
BTW, Galway is one of my favorite cities in the world. That places is really craiking!!

My favorite drink bar none.
Draught bottles can be had in Walmart for 3000 I think. Not a terrible price. They also have standard 8 year-old (drinkable, but not great) Jamesons there for 28,000. Same price as in Ireland!! (almost).
After 4-5 bottles of Guinness and a few generous measures of Jamesons I'm ready to stick on The Dubliners!!!! Or even better The Pogues.
3 Alleys of course. Decent draught Guinness. Not bad considering it's 6000 miles away from St. James's Gate.
Best Guinness I had was in the West of Ireland. Galway, Donegal. Creamy, smooth Guinness with just a little bitterness and a head that lasts to the end. Of course, that doesn't take too long with me!!! I like to drink Guinness traditional-style. No more than 3 or 4 big gulps. Sipping Guinness is for girls.

honestly, guinness has to be the most annoying drink in the world. It's not the beer itself, that's decent, what I hate is the pompous middle aged retard that comes along with it, prattling on about how great it is. I mean, maybe my own avatar would be angry about me for saying this, but i've never heard so much breathless fawning over something so oridinary as i have with guinness drinkers. yeah, maybe i gotta go to ireland and get the real thing. or maybe make my travel plans around something other than beer. guinness fans (i mean the real hard core ones) are just a fat and dumber version of wine snobs who go on and on about some merlot's fruity boquet. go ahead, walk up to a group of middle aged men, casually mention guinness, and sit back and enjoy the most tedious ride of your life as inevitably one of those fucks while go on some 20 minute lecture about how and where you ought to be drikning it.
i'm not attacking anybody particular on this thread and i sorry to just shit on the topic of it, but that's how i feel. |

Mercury, thats 3 references for Galway.
Harpeau's one of favorite cities/towns on earth.
Eamo's best Guinness he ever drank in Ireland (probably earth).
Anyhow, I'm at home now.. and just cracked open a bottle of Guinness.. not the same as a pint.. but I'm at home, what else can I do?
Oh, billybrobby, I felt EXACTLY how you felt until I had a Guinness in Ireland last year. I never got it before. It was nothing special.. but something about drinking it in Ireland really converted me, and since that visit, I just couldn't get enough. Difficult to explain.. its like a conversion or something. |

Tiger Beer is right Billyrobby. Everybody sees Guinness drinkers as tedious bores until they get converted themselves and realise the joy of a good pint of the stuff as opposed to the bitter bile that some bars around the world, and even in Ireland, pass off as guinness.
And, Billyrobby, the man in your avatar would not mind you attacking guinness. He's a wine bore actually!!!! I know because I drank red wine with him at a hotel bar in Belfast. He was completely drunk and boring everyone at the table with boorish behaviour. Never meet your idols was the lesson I learnt that night. |

After a few pints of Guinness nothing is ever boring!! Galway is a great place for drinking. Lots of music and it's cheaper than Dublin. Also it was only 40 minutes by bus from my house so it was frequented quite often!!
I miss it (Guinness) mostly when I'm watching football on the tele. I'm used to drinking something (mostly Guinness / Smithwicks / Jamensons) especially at the big games.
For Guinness there is only 3 touches...
Actually holding the glass in your hand,
Placing the glass to your lips and
Finishing it!!
BTW what do ye think of this Extra Cold Guinness? I'm not a fan of it. A bit too cold for me. |

| I'm not very well travelled around Ireland but on my brief visits there I found the Guinness in Belfast to be nicer than that in Dublin. I think it's because the pubs are mostly privately owned so they take more pride in cleaning the pipes and pouring the drink than the chain pubs. |
