i'm about to sign my contract. how serious are they about the whole 'you can't work for anyone else' thing? the school + immigration. i heard alot of stuff floating around out there.
my employer is a private school but its pretty big and seems pretty professional
i just wanted to be clear on the issue, i don't even plan on moonlighting... but its nice to know the option is there for the extra chedda.. |

If you are on an E-2, you cannot legally work anywhere else without immigration's and your sponsor's approval. So no moonlighting at all if they dont' want you too...whether it's in your contract or not.
Privates are a whole other issue, and are as completely illegal. But that's your choice.

It's illegal, so if you do it (which I don't!) don't tell anybody about it. If there is an overtime clause in your contract, try to change it to "rate to be determined"... they may not go for the change, but then again nobody looks at the contract unless they're sued. Just tell them you're willing to negotiate if they want to add more classes.
Your school or hagwon can then arrange extra classes for you, one-on-one or whatever, you can negotiate to get the rate you want, and you're still working for the same employer. Some believe this is also illegal, but I think you can say it was included in your contract and this falls under the heading of "plausible deniability". |

Their clause should state something like, "Employee will not work at any place other than the designated workplace unless s/he has permission from Employer first," not "Employee will not work at any other place as it is contrary to Korean law". The second one is BS. If they state it that way, have it reworded with both parties agreeing to the rewording. If you want to work at another place and your employer and immigration give you permission to do so, you can. That "big" and "professional" school may have you working your ass off with schedules changing drastically each month and that's probably why they have that clause. Hopefully I'm wrong. |
